Woodhaven 3 - Monroe 2 (2OT)

District 5..Temperance-Bedford. In a very exciting and well played game by both teams, the Warriors of Woodhaven slipped away with a 3-2 (2 OT) win in the District 5 Final at Temp. Bedford. Woodhaven started strong coming close on several occasions. The Warriors opened the scoring at the 11 minute mark on a nice shot by (Soph) Jon Evans, assisted by David McIntyre. Their lead was short lived when the Trojans of Monroe tied the game on a shot from close range. The Trojans scored again before the half. The goal was the result of a bad mistake on Woodhaven's part. To make matters worse for the Warriors, Captain, Justin Evans was given a Red card for dangerous play. The incident occurred when a Trojan mid-fielder slid in for the ball and in an attempt to avoid the slide tackle, Justin attempted to jump over him. On the way down there apparently was some contact. The Red card was an atrocious call on the part of the referee. The Warriors were now playing one man short. At this point, Monroe were now playing exceptionally well and controlling mid-field but the Warriors kept them off the score board. Half time...2-1 Trojans.
The Warriors were able to regroup at the half and were very inspired and motivated despite being down one goal and one man short. Woodhaven pushed forward in their effort to equalize. Both teams made adjustments in their formation and strategy and both teams worked hard. Play moved back and forth and as time seemed to be running out, the Warriors tied the game at the 33 minute mark. This goal was scored by (Jun) John Ciaravino, assisted by Jordan D'Emidio.
Final score....2-2. Next came two 15 minute periods of overtime. Despite fatigue beginning to show, both teams pushed for the winner. As time was running out and a shoot-out appeared looming, the Warriors last ditch effort paid off to the tune of the winning goal with 48 seconds left. This was a great individual effort on the part of (Soph) Jon Evans, who received a beautiful through ball from David McIntyre. The Woodhaven team had many warriors in this game and showed great character in the effort and tenacity. Having an exceptional game for the Warriors were, keeper Mike Ogilvie, Kyle Lesperance, Scott Horrigan, Frank Lucarelli, Andy Vella, Jordan D'Emidio, Chris Clark, John Ciaravino, Derek Salliotte, Justin Evans, David McIntyre and Jon Evans. Woodhaven's season record stands at 20-0-1.

In the Division 21-2 District Final at Monroe Jefferson, the Trenton Trojans faced the Riverview Bucs and a stiff wind in the first half. Fifteen minutes later, Trojan junior striker Joey Morsello crossed a ball in front of the net; senior Nick Badgley flicked the ball from his head to the head of junior midfielder Matthew Quirk, who scored the equalizer. The score remained tied throughout the second half as Trenton had the wind at their back in a steady rain. Many scoring attempts were thwarted by the stellar goalkeeping of the Bucs' Ryan Romanowski. As the possibility for overtime loomed, Trenton turned the Riverview net into a shooting gallery, finally putting the game-winner in with 55 seconds left on the clock. Senior midfielder Brian Ruetz deftly worked the ball through the defense to bury it hard and low, ensuring a trip to regionals for his side. Sauter got the win, making six saves with the support of Matt Wilger, Matt Karczewski, Devin Donnelly, and Andrew Mrazik at defense. Senior Jerry McNally had a strong showing at midfield. Ithaca 3 - Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central 2

District 43-3 Final. It was Ithaca winning its very first District Title in OT. The first half was very evenly played with each team getting 3 shots on goal. The second half opened up with Nouvel scoring twice (Tommy Wechter and Scott Butterfield) in a matter of 15 minutes. With 15 minutes remaining in regulation, senior Torry Robbennolt took a great flank pass, skirted by two defenders and put the ball in the back of the net. Within 5 minutes, Ithaca's other senior forward Joey Phelps took a flank pass, penetrated the PK box and blasted the ball past the Nouvel keeper. With the scored tied at 2 and Ithaca beginning to pressure Nouvel constantly in their defensive third, Joey Phelps again turned a flank pass into an opportunity but was taken down in the PK box with a shot to the groin. Nouvel's keeper, Andrew Wolohan guessed correctly making a diving save deep in the corner of the goal. With the momentum changed, Ithaca headed to OT with wind in its sail. Ithaca controlled much of the OT and with 6:57 remaining, Joey Phelps received a flank pass on the run and crossed the ball to the six where a Nouvel player misplayed the cross into his own net. Ithaca's record is now 16-4 and notching its 53rd win in school history (4th year.) Ithaca will now play Jackson Lumen Christi on 10/27/04 at Williamston. Game time is set for 7:00pm.

Still stinging from the 2003 post-season defeat, the Trojans came well-prepared and ready to shoot against a determined Allen Park squad. However, the Jaguars' keeper, Ed Neizgoda, and defenders Mike Lewis and Chris Albers were impenetrable until the 46th minute, when junior midfielder Matthew Quirk's  cross from deep in the corner found the head of senior midfielder Jerry McNally. McNally's strong finish was the only goal of the match. The well-coached Allen Park squad never let up and fought hard until the final whistle. Junior Robby Sauter notched another shutout with three saves and the help of seniors Matt Wilger and Devin Donnelly, junior Matt Karczewski, and sophomore Andrew Mrazik at defense. St. Mary Catholic Central 2 - Milan 0

Milan bowed out of the state tournament after a tough fought game with their friendly rival SMCC After loosing to SMCC the first time 3-0 and tying them 0-0 the second time, the third time we met was destined to be a very scrappy game. SMCC went ahead 1-0 with 6 minutes left in the first half. Milan had several scoring opportunities throughout the half with 6 corner kicks but nothing to show for it. SMCC scored 12 minutes into the second half and we couldn't generate any opportunities after that. We knew that Coach Rosenbrook would have his players ready for the game and they were. I have coached against Paul for about 20 years off & on and he runs a very good program. After the game there were handshakes and some hugs between the players. This rivalry is what athletics is about. It would have been nice to get to the next game but the better team won tonight.

In what will surely go down as another classic match between these two Division I teams, Okemos moves into the District 4-1 semifinal match with an impressive win over Brighton. The history between these teams seems to bring out the best in both of them, including last year when Okemos knocked Brighton (which were nationally ranked at the time) out of the state tournament in the District final. This match was closely contested by both sides with lots of passion, hard tackles and opportunities to score. Halftime score was 0-0 and both teams picked up their intensity in the 2nd half working for the win. Okemos had many chances to score but couldn't seem to hit the target, with several shots just wide or hitting the post.
