The weekly news release of the Detroit Ignition

(Southfield, Mich., April 2, 2008) – The Detroit Ignition (20-8) will host the first-place Milwaukee Wave (21-7) on Friday for the club’s last regular-season home game.    The Ignition are looking to tie up the series after losing a hard-fought battle to the Wave just last weekend. Kick-off for Friday’s contest is at 7:35 pm (EST).  The club is dedicating the game to members of the armed and community services – members of the Police, Fire and EMS Departments, the Michigan State Police, the United States Army National Guard, United States Navy and the United States Marine Corp will be in attendance.  Fans can also arrive early (6:00) to interact with police, fire and EMS vehicles, a custom Army Humvee and the Army climbing wall in the Compuware parking lot.  The Ignition will travel to Baltimore on Saturday to take on the third-place Blast for Detroit’s last regular-season game.

LAST WEEK’S OUTINGS:                                                                                                                                                             March 28, 2008:  Ignition, 6  Ironmen, 4:  The Detroit Ignition defeated the expansion New Jersey Ironmen 6-4 Friday night for the club’s eighth straight win.  The victory gave the Ignition a bye in the first round of the MISL playoffs.

The Ironmen got on the board first as midfielder Tim O’Neill notched a two-point goal just 42 seconds into the match.  Exactly two minutes later, Jamar Beasley evened the score with an unassisted two-point tally for Detroit.  With less than two minutes remaining in the first, forward Worteh Sampson booted an unassisted two-point shot past New Jersey keeper Tony Meola.

The scoreboard remained at 4-2 until the third quarter, when midfielder Kyt Selaidopoulos added two more points for the Ignition with an assist from netminder Danny Waltman.  The Ironmen would score one more goal before the match was over, but the Ignition held on and came away with a 6-4 victory.

March 30, 2008:  Ignition, 12 Wave, 18: The Detroit Ignition (20-8) fell to the Milwaukee Wave (21-7) 18-12 Sunday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Arena.  The game was the first of two crucial matchups between the two clubs who have been battling for first place in the Major Indoor Soccer League for several weeks.   The teams will meet again on Friday, April 4 at Compuware Arena for the Ignition’s last regular-season home game.

Just 30 seconds into the match, Jamar Beasley scored his 30th goal of the season to give the Ignition a 2-0 lead.   At 8:40 of the first, defender Josh Rife used his head to bury a two-point shot with an assist from Worteh Sampson.   Forward Hewerton Moreira increased Detroit’s lead to 6 with a two-point tally off an assist from Droo Callahan at 6:04 of the second.  The Wave got on the board with just over 7 minutes remaining in the half, as forward Brett Wiesner put a two-point shot past Ignition keeper Danny Waltman.  Kyt Selaidopoulos responded for the Ignition, scoring his 50th MISL career goal at 9:48 to bring the score to 8-2 at halftime.

Wave midfielder Marcio Leite cut the Ignition’s lead to 4 with a two-point tally just under three minutes into the second half.  At 7:33, Milwaukee defender Troy Dusosky added another two points for the home team off a give from Giuliano Oliviero.   With less than five minutes left in the third, Michael King tied the clubs up at 8-all with a two-pointer off an assist from Milwaukee midfielder Jonathan Santos.  At 13:36 of the third, MISL scoring leader Greg Howes gave the Wave their first lead of the night with a three-point tally off an assist from Oliviero.

Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Dusosky scored his second goal of the night on a power-play to put the Wave up 5.  Hewerton cut the lead to 3 with a two-point goal at 3:18 with an assist from Ignition defender/Assistant Coach Matt Johnson.  At 8:21, Ignition defender Jonathan Greenfield put the Ignition within one with a two-point tally off an assist from Beasley.   At 11:42, Leite buried a three-point score that prompted the Ignition to bring in Callahan as a sixth attacker.  Two minutes later, Wiesner took advantage of Detroit’s open net, scoring a three-point tally off an assist from Howes to bring the final score to 18-12.
