The Oscoda Owls Varsity Soccer team got back into the win column on
Thursday night, downing Whittemore-Prescott, 6-3. Freshman
Captain Evan Dennis scored his first varsity goal in the 11th minute to

DeOrnellas loose. Jon Roach got in on the scoring three

to get on the field and play", was Coach Gary Schneider's take on the
match. "We had a few of our starters and a few bench players
out of uniform tonight nursing minor injuries. It was good to
have all these eager players to put in."

the season. Their spacing and passing is much improved",
added Assistant Coach Tim Colborn. "Those kids don't quit coming at you
despite the score."

In
a North Division (Lakes Conference, KLAA) clash, the Knights of Walled
Lake Northern came out on top in a hotly contested match. Entering the
second half scoreless, it appeared that neither side would find the

draw would be broken in the 65th minute when Northern’s Travis McClure,
camped out near Central’s back post, put home a direct kick sent across
the face of Central’s net by Austin Rogers. The lead would be
short-lived for the Knights, though, as Central’s Brad Lyons converted

Woodhaven 1 - Dearborn Edsel Ford 1
A trip to Dearborn
Edsel Ford for a Mega Red Conference match proved to be extremely
disappointing with the Warriors of Woodhaven dropping two vital points.
They played a very good game and created some fine chances but the tall
Thunderbird mid-fielders shut down much of the Warriors attack. This
was an extremely physical and intense game with no love lost between
the teams. Some quality chances by the Warriors but a bit unlucky. HT
0-0. Second half, the Warriors pushed forward even more, changing
keepers and adding another forward. Some excellent chances but still no
goals. With the clock winding down, The Warriors grabbed that elusive
goal with just under 4 minutes when Dustin Salliotte caught the top
right of the keeper with a 35 yard shot. Formation changed, the
Warriors set out to protect that one goal lead like they have done so
well all season. Almost did it but a very controversial call by a
linesman who was 20 yards farther away from the play the center
official, indicated that the ball hit a Warrior defenders arm among the
congested area containing about 16 players. The center official said he
did not see it, even though he was within 15 yards of the
play...ridiculous call. The decision was a penalty kick to the
Thunderbirds with 51 seconds left in the game. Edsel converted to tie
the game. Although the Warriors remain undefeated, they have tied two
of their last three games in the Mega Red Conference, allowing the
Dearborn team to move into first place if they win their make-up game.
Woodhaven season record stands at 11-2-3 o/all and 6-0-2 Mega Red.
Edsel Ford are 1-5-1 Mega Red.

Alcona 4 - Oscoda 3
The
Oscoda Owls Varsity soccer team got off to another slow start on Monday
night and it again cost them a win against the Alcona Tigers. The Owls
spotted the Tigers four goals before they turned up their offense and
began making plays but they fell short, 4-3.
The first half was
played even up with Alcona finding the net with less than three minutes
left when Wesley Richards hammered home a goal. They came out strong in
the second half and put the Owls back on their heels. Alcona found the
net three times, all scored by Robert Rynca. He netted the ball in the
46th, 47th and the 57th minutes. Oscoda finally put a tally on the
board in the 58th minute when Brandon McCausey converted a Penalty
Kick. The Owls scored again five minutes later when Ryan Clouse, back
from a week on the injured list, hit Josh DeOrnellas for a goal. AJ
Morse finished off the Owls scoring when he stole a ball in front of
the net and blasted a shot at the 74th minute mark. Try as they might
the Owls couldn't get the equalizer past the Alcona Keeper.
Coty
Nolff gave up all four Alcona goals in the net and only managed five
saves. He was releived by Jeremy Smith who made eight saves as Alcona
tried to increase their lead.

Woodhaven 1 - Dearborn Crestwood 0
In a hard fought contest
at Dearborn Heights Crestwood, the Woodhaven Warriors took home all
three points to maintain their lead in the Mega Red Conference. Both
teams played hard, very little opportunities by either team, with both
defenses doing their job well. HT 0-0. The Warriors were desperate for
the three points in light of losing two points at Monroe in their
previous game. Losing any points tonight would really hurt with
Dearborn lurking right behind them in the Red Conference. As the second
half progressed, the Warriors continued to push forward to gain a
valuable goal. They were already down to one sub on the bench and also
had to use injured back-up keeper in goal for the second half. Full
back, Tim Vella headed over the out-coming Crestwood keeper with 15
minutes remaining after a shot by Matt Pendrick had been stopped by the
keeper. After this, a tired Woodhaven team employed their consistently
tough defensive formation to shut down any Crestwood threat. This was a
great team effort by the Warriors but the injury list continues to
grow. The Warrior shut-out was shared by Dustin Salliotte and Tony
Jonuzi, the teams 11th shut-out of the season. The Woodhaven season
record stands at 11-2-2 o/all and 6-0-1 Mega Red. Crestwood are 1-5-0

Muskegon Western Michigan Christian 2 - Hudsonville Freedom Baptist 1
Walled Lake Northern 3 - Waterford Mott 0
Northern started the game a little slow, but once they got their rhythm
they played an extremely effective match. Kyle Huismann, normally a
keeper, had a stellar night as he scored a hat trick for the Knights.
Huismann got the Knights on the scoreboard in the 29th minute as he
received a nice pass from Austin Rogers near the far right corner of
the box, beat his defender, and hit a low shot to the back post beyond
a diving Dean Dziewit. Goal number two came in the 50th minute of play
as Kyle Rutz played a nice corner kick in front of Mott’s box where
Mike Ankoviak elevated and put his head to the ball. Huismann stepped
in front of the shot and it redirected off his back and away from the
man on the post. Goal #3 came six minutes later as Kyle Rutz took
possession of a throw-in on the left wing and sent a nice cross to
Huismann in the middle of the pitch near the top of the box. Huismann
put a touch on the ball, beat the defender, and bent a hard shot inside
the far right post. Both teams’ keepers played good games with Mott’s
Dziewit stopping three of Northern’s six shots on goal while Northern’s
junior keeper, Brian Johnston, played a very strong game in net as he
made two saves. That tally doesn’t explain the nice plays that Johnston
made to eliminate Mott’s opportunities before they could shots off on
goal. Johnston earned his 2nd shutout in as many games. The entire
Knights team should receive special recognition as each player who
stepped foot on the pitch had great games. Defensively, Ankoviak,
Travis McClure, and Garrett Breeding were a brick wall. In the middle,
Rogers, Connor Noel, Matt DeCarolis, Rutz, Shane Cesarz, Josh Garcia,
Nick Naife, Brandon Hall, Colton Bartell, and Ben Cosgrove controlled
the middle of the pitch with strong defensive play and outstanding
distribution up top. Finally, the guys up top played their hearts out
as Ian Waldie and PJ Tsurui played physical and intelligent soccer.
Northern improves to 8-2-3 overall and 4-0-3 in divisional play. Mott
falls to 3-7-1 overall and 1-5-1 in divisional play.

Oscoda 4 - Gladwin 2
The Oscoda Owls Varsity Soccer team got back on track tonight with a
win over Gladwin Skeels Christian, 4-2. Oscoda put a starting line up
on the field that consisted of mainly the Fabulous Freshmen and a
scattering of returning veterans. Oscoda improved their record to 6-3
for the season.
The "youngin's" took only three minutes to hook up on a goal. Jordan
Corwin fed a beautiful pass forward to winger Brendan Eberhardt and he
blasted the first goal of his varsity career. Skeels did answer just
three minutes later. In the thirteenth minute Brandon McCuasey, moved
up from his normal defensive position, scored his first of the season
after receiving a nice pass from fellow defender Skylar Thurston. The
score remained 2-1 in Oscoda's favor into the second half.
Skeels knotted the match up just three minutes into the second half
when they converted a Penalty Kick but Coach Gary Schneider started
going back to his normal line-up early in the half. Leading scorer AJ
Morse got his chance to enter the offense and at the 53 minute mark
found the netting after collecting a loose ball. Morse scored his
second of the match in the 68th minute when Jon Roach found Morse's
head with a floater into the box, sealing the victory.
Coach Schneider said, "It was great getting the freshmen and new kids
so much playing time. They work hard at practice and deserved the
chance to show what they can do. They play well together showing the
great experience they have gotten through the local AYSO program. Mike
Wimmer had an outstanding match as well. He distributed the ball well
tonight and played with a lot of hustle. Hopefully we got our passing
game back on track tonight!"
Freshman Captain Evan Dennis led the squad in steal with five. McCausey
had six and Buddy Jackson five intercepts. Nolan Myles and Morse had
four intercepts each.

Monroe 1 - Woodhaven 1
In a Mega Red Conference game at
Monroe, the Trojans were able to stop the Warriors Mega Red winning
streak at five. It was a fast paced and very intense game. Play moved
back and forth through the first half. Monroe struck first when Jacob
Schweinsberg scored at the five minute mark to put the Trojans in the
lead. The Warriors worked hard but the five man defensive formation for
the Trojans played very well. Woodhaven tied the game at the 33 minute
mark of the first half when Shane Theisen fired one home after
receiving a pass from Ryan Koscielny. HT 1-1. Second half, lot of
mid-field play, with the Warriors gaining several break-aways but could
not finish. Neither could get a score on keepers Dustin Salliotte
(Woodhaven) or Nick Tyson (Monroe). Monroe earned their tie,
their first point in the Mega Red. Very little between the teams, with
two critical points dropped by the Warriors but a tie was probably a
fair result. The Trojans score board indicated that the Warriors
outshot the Trojans by 13 to 7, proving to be an exciting game.

Walled Lake Northern 2 – Walled Lake Western 2
In
stark contrast to their match three days earlier, it wasn’t handsome
soccer. For a large chunk of the game, it was downright lackluster. A
number of flurries out in front of each team’s goals presented each
side with a number of opportunities. Northern got on the scoreboard
early when, in the 7th minute of play, Mike Ankoviak put a head to a
corner kick that hit the cross bar and deflected back out into a crowd
where Travis McClure struck it and it rebounded off a defender. Austin
Rogers gathered the ball and got off the third shot that found the back
of the net. Seventeen minutes later Ardit Dushkaj (with an assist by
Alex Thomson) hit a shot from far out that hit the cross bar. Thinking
the ball would clear the bar, Northern’s keeper, Kyle Huismann, had his
hands up in front of the bar protecting against the ball dipping down
and in. Unfortunately for Huismann, the ball hit the cross bar,
deflected down and hit the back of his hands, falling in the net. The
third goal came from Western as play came down the left side and Lewin
sent a cross in front of Northern’s net. Kyle Alsheskie got up above
everyone and headed the ball in to put Western up 2-1 in the
second half. The fourth tally came as Rogers gathered a ball from a
Northern goal kick, sent it in from the right wing onto the feet of Ben
Cosgrove. Cosgrove beat a defender, carried the ball inside the 18 and
hit a hard, low shot into the right corner of the net. Northern’s
Huismann had 10 saves while Western’s Blake Hunter stopped 8.
Northern’s record is 6-2-3, while Western’s record is 4-3-3.

Laingsburg 3 - Ovid 1
Elsie
The Wolfpack hosted Ovid-Elsie for their 1st match against each other
this season. The game started rather slow as both teams were feeling
each other out. O-E's Keifer Hall was able to make two early breaks in
behind the Laingsburg defense but came up empty. Laingsburg's John
Brown scored the first goal of the game at the 3 minute mark as he put
in a goal from 5 yds off the Matt Johnson pass. Laingsburg was
controlling possession and the flow of the game but occasionally
Ovid-Elsie's Keifer Hall would break free and attempt a run on goal..
At the 26 minute mark, it paid off as Keifer was able to draw a penalty
on the Laingsburg Sweeper Eric Silvernail. Philip Ching made the
penalty kick to tie the game. From that point, the rest of the game was
in control of the Wolfpack as Ovid-Elsie did not generate a shot on
goal for the rest of the half. Laingsburg kept the ball in their
attacking half and moved the ball well from side to side and in the
24th minute, John Brown tallied his second goal of the game off the
Dalton Guggemos assist. Ten minutes later, it was John Brown for his
third goal of the quick passing of Mitchell Matzenbach and Dalton
Guggemos for the 3-1 halftime lead. The second period saw the ball
almost exclusively in possession of the Wolfpack as they controlled the
play and flow of the game and moved the ball well. Laingsburg did not
score again but they were able to work on their control and passing and
were able to rotate most of their players into the game and limit
Ovid-Elsie to 2 shots on goal in the second half, both of which came
when Laingsburg was playing a man down. Ovid-Elsie is 4-3-1 on the
