Monroe
hosted Dearborn Edsel Ford in its first Mega Red Division match of the
season, with the Thunderbirds prevailing by a 3-1 score. The contest
was back-and-forth until Edsel Ford exposed the Trojan midfield at 24’
and scored 3 goals in a six-minute span to take a 3-0 halftime lead.
Monroe came back with good pressure for the second half, and Paul
Sulfaro hit the mark at 55’. In the next ten minutes, the Trojans
controlled play but missed on two excellent chances. From that point
the match was evenly competed. Final score was Edsel Ford 3, Monroe 1.

Woodhaven 1 - Dearborn Crestwood 0
In
a Mega Red Conference game, the Warriors of Woodhaven gained a nice
single goal victory over visiting Crestwood. It was a very hard fought
game, physical at times but very entertaining. Woodhaven notched their
goal at the 35 minute mark of the first half when Shane Theisen
received a through pass from Tim Vella, carried it for about 20 yards,
drew the keeper out and slid the ball into the bottom corner. The
Warriors had a number of excellent opportunities but the Chargers
played a good defensive game. HT 1-0. Second half, the Warriors pressed
even more but the Crestwood keeper played did well to stop some of the
quality shots. The Warriors did hit the crossbar and had a real nice
goal called back ....the player made contact with the keeper ???. The
Warriors defense once again played excellent, denying Crestwood the
opportunity to really get into the game. Dustin Salliotte had the
Warrior shut-out, his fourth of the season. Great performances from
Warriors Dustin Salliotte, Vinny DiResta, Tim Vella, A.J.Bertani, Mario
Konja, Greg Smiecinski, Zach Fuzzy, Tony Jonuzi, Alex Troisi and Zach

solid defensive game from Aaron Steinley, Ty Nalewyko, Barry Griggs,
Brandon Switalski, Garrett Mead, and Lupe Ruiz. Team Super Sub Ed

Oscoda 5 - Ogemaw 3
The Oscoda Owls Soccer team played their second match Monday night,
hosting the Ogemaw Falcons. Ogemaw came in with three matches already
under their belts (0-2-1), but the young Owls took the action right at
them. Oscoda scored twice in the first 10 minutes to take a lead. The
Falcons scraped back and tied the match early in the second half before
the Owls took command for good, winning 5-3.
"We got off to a GREAT start tonight and not our traditional slow
start!", was Coach Gary Schneider's response. "We came right out of the
blocks firing and controlling the ball. They made their big push at the
end of the half and beginning of the second. We let them tie it up but
then we came right back at them."
Jon Roach scored his first of the year, just four and a half minutes
into the match, when he took a Josh DeOrnellas cross and muscled it
into the net. Six minutes later Captain AJ Morse converted a Penalty
Kick to give the Owls the 2-0 lead. Ogemaw pulled closer at the 28th
minute mark when Robbie Kish netted the ball. Oscoda answered back in
the 34th minute when Captain Ryan Clouse found a streaking Derek Boston
with a long pass. Boston one touched the ball past the sliding Falcon
keeper. Ogemaw drew closer with just seconds left in the half. Ben
Wiltse floated a hanger over the Owl keeper for a goal. Ogemaw tied the
match nine minutes into the second half when Kish netted his second of
the match. Roach put Oscoda up for good in the 67th minute when he
blasted an Captain Evan Dennis pass into the netting. DeOrnellas scored
his third of the season, for insurance, in the 73rd minute. DeOrnellas,
Clouse and Dennis all picked up assists.

up two goals but made nine saves. Nolff gave up one goal and made six
saves.
The Oscoda defense was led by Clouse with six steals and seven
intercepts. Dennis had four of each. Skylar Thurston had six
intercepts. Nolan Myles and Kyle McCausey each had four intercepts.

Riverview 7 - Carlson 4
This non conference match was quite the entertaining soccer game.
Riverview scored first in the 15' on a goal from Epamenondas Mihas.
Riverview got another goal 12 minutes later thanks to Ronald Stewart on
an assist from Eric Voetz. Four minutes later, Riverview struck again,
this time Eric put the ball into the back of the net. Carlson then
pulled their goalie Josh Dye for Andreas Gikas and put Josh on the
field to try and provide a spark to a team that had been simply going
through the motions of the match. This move paid off as Carlson got on
the scoreboard themselves twice in the last 4 minutes with goals from
Brandon Knott unassisted and Phil Johnson on a penalty kick after Pat
Lancaster made a great run into the box and was taken down by Riverview
defenders only 24 seconds later. Score at half time was Carlson 2 and
Riverview 3.
Riverview struck quickly in the second half with a goal from Eric again
only 3 minutes in. Riverview's Jordan Ingison answered with another
goal in the 53'. Carlson finally answered with a goal of their own only
30 seconds later from Martin Delpaz on an assist from Robert Koss. In
the 62', Riverview struck once again on a goal from Adam O'Callaghan.
Only 3 minutes later, Riverview scored their 7th goal of the match from
an assist by Ronald Stewart and goal from Eric (his third of the
match). Carlson got their last goal on a PK from Brandon Knott after
Josh Dye was taken out in the box on a good scoring opportunity. Final

U of D 3 - Ann Arbor Huron 0
Walled Lake Northern 1 - Canton 0
The men of Walled Lake Northern’s
soccer team did something Saturday that they have failed to do in the
school’s previous six years of existence: they defeated a
very skilled squad from Canton in the first
of their three games in the Balconi Tournament. When you only
get two shots on goal during a game, it’s particularly nice when at
least one of those shots finds the back of the net. And for
the Knights, Brandon Hall’s blast from the top of the arc to the top
left corner of goal did exactly that in the 26
th
minute of play. It was far from easy for the Knights,
however. Canton kept pressure on the Knights all game, doing
a good job of building from their back line and controlling play in the
midfield for a good portion of the game. With his offense
failing to mount a legitimate challenge, coach Chris Stevanovic put
several of his newer players in the midfield and up top.
Newcomers Nick Buglak, Michael Aravas, and Shane Cesarz teamed up with
Kyle Rutz and Hall to bring a spark to Northern’s offense that
eventually led to the game’s only score. Midfielders Conner
Noel, Danny Harris, Nick Naife, Matt DeCarolls, and Evan Kowalski
helped Northern by winning balls in the midfield, bringing pressure
into Canton’s end, and applying defensive pressure on a strong Canton
attack. The Knights’ tradition of strong defense continued as
backs Travis McClure, Mike Ankoviak, and Garrett Breeding all made
significant contributions to the team’s victory. Kyle
Huismann earned his second shutout in as many games, making several key
saves. Canton put seven shots on target and Huismann, with
the help of his teammates, was able to keep all seven out of net.

Plymouth 1 - Dexter 0
Canton 0 - Ann Arbor Huron 0
Game 3
Salem 5 - U of D 1 (Finals) Salem wins tournament
Walled Lake Northern 1 - Catholic Central 0
Following a difficult last minute 1
– 0 loss to the men of U of D, the Knights came out strong against a
powerful Detroit Catholic Central squad and earned yet another first by
defeating Catholic Central 1 – 0 in their final match of the Balconi
Tournament. With a strong wind at their backs and a short,
hard-packed field, CC was able to keep play in Northern’s half for much
of the first half. And when the Knights were able to break
out of their own end of the pitch, they encountered a well-disciplined
and stingy CC defense that did not give up a quality shot.
After the break, Coach Chris Stevanovic pulled Kyle
Huismann out of net and put junior keeper Brian Johnston in where he
made several key saves to keep the game even. Shortly after
entering the game at forward, Huismann received a pass just inside CC’s
end of the pitch, turned, and played a “gate ball” diagonally between
several defenders and onto the running feet of Kyle Rutz, who beat the
keeper to tally the game’s only score. The entire Northern
squad, from the back line all the way up to the forwards, had very good
games against a perennial state powerhouse. PJ Tsurui had a
strong second half, working hard in CC’s end of the field which helped
alleviate some of the offensive pressure being put on
Northern. Freshman Brian Clancy, a JV player who was brought
up to varsity for the tournament, helped an injury-riddled Northern
squad by putting in a solid effort at midfield. Huismann
turned away all five shots on goal to earn the shutout, while Johnston
also stopped the five shots on target that he faced. The
Knights are now 3 – 1 – 0 on the season.

Huron 0
Opening game for both teams
and a hard fought one at that between two local schools. Both
defenses played well and while the Woodhaven Warriors defense only
allowed a couple of shots on goal, it was the Huron keeper who played a
standout game. Huron made the Warriors pay for having a very
small bench. Woodhaven carried most of the play in the first
half but their finishing fell short. Half time 0-0.
The Warriors were looking a bit tired in the second half and Huron
started moving around more again, their keeper, Zac
Richardson stood tall. The Warriors managed their first goal

Justin Ritchey led the Splitters with the hat trick while Senior Brian
Wilcox tallied the last goal. Junior Goalkeeper Nolan Holmes
earned his first varsity shutout. Lincoln next travels to
Tecumseh in a SEC league match.
Walled Lake Northern 2 - Hartland 0
In a physical and often contentious
match Monday evening, Walled Lake Northern’s men’s soccer team opened
its season with a victory over the Hartland Eagles by a score of 2 – 0
in front of a large home crowd. Junior Michael Aravas tallied
the Knights’ first goal of the 2008 campaign at the 15 minute mark by
beating Hartland’s keeper, Cory Bodziak. Senior midfielder
Brandon Hall set up Aravas to earn the Knights’ first assist of the
season. The second and final goal of the match came from
senior PJ Tsurui in the 22
nd minute of the first
half with a flick past the keeper to the far corner of goal.
Sophomore Kyle Rutz earned the assist by beating several Eagles players
at midfield and sending the ball onto the feet of Aravas just outside
the 18. Considering the fact that this was the first league
match of the season for all of the players, Monday night’s contest had
moments of strong play from all of the players on the pitch. However,
Northern’s head coach Chris Stevanovic told
his players after the game that, while they came out on top on the
scoreboard, he didn’t feel that they played a good game
overall. Yet for nearly a third of the Knights’ players, this
was their first experience on the varsity pitch while the Eagles came
to the match with a more seasoned roster. Both squads
displayed play characteristic of an early season match.
Turnovers hampered each team’s ability to sustain consistent pressure
in their opponent’s end. On a brighter note, Northern’s
defense and midfield did a good job of keeping serious threats against
their goal to a minimum. Returning varsity team members
Travis McClure, Mike Ankoviak, and Evan Kowalski paired up well in the
back with newcomers Garrett Breeding and Nick Naife to stifle the
Eagles’ offense. Northern’s keeper Kyle Huismann faced six
shots on goal and saved all six while the Eagles’ Bodziak stopped four
of six shots on goal. Huismann made a key save, diving to his
right, midway through the second half that could have completely
changed the complexion of the game.
Country Day 2 - Goodrich 1
In a closely contested game, Goodrich opened the scoring 5 minutes into
the game on a goal by David Garr, assisted by Bobby Short.
Ricky McCarthy scored on a penalty kick late in the first
half for Country Day. Nick prys scored on a breakaway
(assisted by ricky McCarthy) midway through the second half. County
Day’s record 1 – 0. Goodrich record 0 – 1.
