Oscoda 6 - Hart 2
The 2010 Oscoda Owls soccer team continues to reach new
heights this season. Thursday night in Traverse City the marked another
first for the program by winning their first Regional match, 6-2 over the
Hart Pirates. Oscoda advances to face Whitehall on Saturday at 1:00pm in
Traverse City.
The Owls held off an early Hart attack and then countered
with their powerful offense. Anthony Alderete put the Owls up one goal at
the 8:05 mark when he converted a Penalty Kick. Although the Owls continued
to force the offense they were unable to find the net again until the 28th
minute when Jordan Corwin crossed the ball from the wing and team goal
leader, Kyle Wheatley, headed it into the back of the net. The Owls were
happy to take the 2-0 lead into the half.
Oscoda netted their third of
the match at the 57:50 mark when Kyle McCausey sent a ball straight up the
middle of the field and Alderete ran onto it and blasted his second goal of
the match. Ten minutes later, McCausey made the same pass and Wheatley
netted his second of the evening, giving the Owls a commanding 4-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, McCausey scored his first of the game when
Wheatley took a Free Kick and lobbed it onto the head of Kyle for a goal.
Hart finally managed to push past the Owl defense and scored two goals in
the 71st and 77th minutes. Cristian Arellano scored on a Free Kick that he
blasted through an Oscoda defensive wall and beat Oscoda goalkeeper, Jeremy
Smith, to the side netting. Angel Riley netted the Pirates second goal.
McCausey used his head again with less than a minute to play to seal the
victory. Josh DeOrnellas earned an assist on the play.
Smith had another
stellar night in goal, stopping 12 of the 14 shots he faced. Brandon
McCausey, brother Kyle and Evan Dennis all earned 5 steals. Brandon led the
team in intercepts with nine. Patrick Maher recorded six.
"We played well
tonight and played our game and didn't allow Hart to goad us into their
style of play", was Head Coach Gary Schneider's take. "Brenden Eberhardt was
another player that stepped up tonight and had a big match for us."
The
Owls up their season record to 20-3-2 heading into Saturday's showdown with

Cranbrook was up against Detroit Country Day in the District Finals for

the end. Senior forward netted the first goal to hush the Yellow Jackets.
This goal was assisted by Connor Sakwa. Several minutes later, DCD had a
header off of a cross, impossible for keeper Andrew Rouff to stop. The game
was 1-1 and regulation was ticking down. 80 minutes were up and the score
was 1-1. Every fan was on their feet cheering on their respective private
school. After 10 minutes of overtime the game was still tied as CK was
possessing the ball better than ever and doing a great job of spreading the
field. In the 2nd half of overtime, the game was still tied until around 20
seconds were left on the clock, when DCD crossed a ball in and happened to
be in the perfect spot for one of their players to head the ball into the
corner of the net. Detroit Country day was victorious 2-1. This loss ends
the season for CK. It was a very successful season, ending the regular

playing with the wind at their back. Carlson came out in the second half and

Troy 2 - Rochester 0
Rochester played a solid game against 3rd Ranked Troy, but two beautiful
shots and a couple of questionable calls were to much to overcome as the
Falcons fell 2-0.
All of the scoring occured in the final 10 minutes of
the 1st half. Troy got on the board as Sophomore Zach Koepke fired a laser
from 30-yards out into the top left corner for a 1-0 Colt lead. It looked
like that would be the halftime score, however Troy benefited from a phantom
call. Mr. Soccer candidate Senior Sean Cunningham put a beautiful shot into
the same spot as Koepke's ball off the ensuing free kick with 30 seconds
left in the half to put the Colts up 2-0.
The 2nd half was entertaining
as both teams went back and forth. With 20 minutes left the Falcons had a
great chance to get back in the game as Sophomore Miles Dale broke free on
goal. Dale was tackled inside the box in what should have been a clear PK,
but no call was made. Rochester continued to pressure but the Troy
Goalkeeper made some nice saves to preserve the shutout. For Rochester, the
defense was solid in front of Senior Goalkeeper Chris Stewart who made
several great saves.
With the loss, Rochester finishes their season at

District 2 -1. A hard fought game at Woodhaven. The Warriors started
off well creating many opportunities but the Tigers defense played
outstanding. Woodhaven jumped out to a quick lead at the 7 minute mark, when

nice ball from Mario Konja. This set the tone for much of the first half.

curtailed most shots. The Tigers keeper made some nice saves. There was only
38 seconds left in the half when the Tigers scored with a ground ball from
just outside the 18 yard box, catching the keepers left corner. HT 1-1. The
Warriors took to the offense quickly and went ahead after 3 minutes into the
second half, when Merrick Konja received a ball on the right side of the 18
yard box and fired high into the net from a sharp angle. This was assisted
by Alan Guzman. Play moved back and forth and the Tigers were working hard
to tie the game again but it was the Warriors who opened up a two goal lead
at the 23rd minute mark, when Mario Konja rattled the post and then into the
net, following a Alan Guzman pass. The Tigers never gave up and the Warriors
were showing signs of fatigue. Around the 31st minute mark, the Tigers
scored to make it a one goal game. The ball was sent into the goalmouth from
a corner. A Belleville player got his head on it and the ball glanced off a
Warriors player before entering the net. After that the Warriors weathered
the storm and had some quality counter-attacks and were able to hold on for
the win. A well played game by both teams. The Woodhaven season record
stands at 14-3-2 o/all.

to break down an overmatched Spartan squad. Oscoda led 2-0 at the half,
taking 14 shots on goal to the Spartan's 5. In the second half Oscoda took
just 13 shots but scored on 5 of them and held Pinconning to just 3 shots.
Jeremy Smith was stellar in goal, earning his 9th shutout of the season.
For the second match in a row, Sophomore Kyle Wheatley set a school record.
Wheatley enjoyed himself on Monday by showing off his passing skills instead
of his shooting. Kyle assisted on 4 of the Oscoda goals and broke season
assist record held by AJ Morse, setting the mark at 22.
Oscoda scored
first in the 5th minute when Wheatley hit Anthony Alderete with a long pass
up the middle of the field. Alderete took the pass and beat the Spartan
keeper to the corner of the net. Just 41 seconds later Alderete scored again
when a ball ended up on his foot after a scrum in front of the net. Evan
Dennis was credited with the goal. Oscoda controlled the action for the next
30 minutes but was unable to find the net again before the half.
Dennis
scored in the second minute of the second half when Kyle McCausey headed a
ball to him and Dennis flipped it past the keeper. Three minutes later,
Alderete scored his third of the match with an assist from Wheatley.
Wheatley connected with Dennis with another outlet pass in the 51st minute
and then hit McCausey for a goal just 30 seconds later. McCausey wasted no
time picking up his second of the match in the 54th minute with Dennis
earning another assist. Coach Gary Schneider emptied the bench but the Owls
were unable to get the eighth goal to stop the match.

Woodhaven 4 - Trenton 1
The
Warriors of Woodhaven were on the road to Trenton for this local rivalry.
Trenton currently held the top spot in the league with the Warriors trailing
one game behind. The Warriors knew they had to get a good start in this
contest. That they did, when they scored with just four minutes gone. Tony
DiResta fired a hard rising shot on the Trojan net from about 10 yards out,
following nice work by Alex Troisi. The Warriors had the edge at this time
and scored number two, with 19 minutes gone. This goal was scored by Alex
Troisi, when he slid a low ball into the keepers left corner, after
receiving a slick pass from Tony DiResta. Trenton continued to fight for
every ball and they pulled one back when Dayne Patterson scored following a
through ball down the middle when he out-hustled a couple of Warrior
defenders, before catching the lower right side of the Woodhaven keeper. The
Trojans looked dangerous at times and the Warriors had to dodge the bullet
on a couple of occasions. The Warriors tested the Trojan keeper on a number
of occasions and the Trenton keeper played very well. Woodhaven got back
into the game and their hard work paid off with a nicely headed goal by
Mario Konja, from a Josh Dwornick free-kick, about thirty yards out on the
right wing. There was just over three minutes left in the half. HT 3-1.
Second half started with the Warriors being careful but not employing an
overly defensive formation. Their offensive group of Alex Troisi, Tony
DiResta and Mario Konja were in excellent form and playing with a lot of
confidence. The Warriors defense stood tall and were able to shut down a
very formidable Trojan offense. Woodhaven scored one more goal at the 32nd

goal-mouth, and very calmly one timed the ball into the Trojan net. Mario
Konja supplied the necessary pass. This was Henry's first game back after
sitting out almost the whole season with a torn quad muscle. While this was
truly a team effort, although Zack Bennett, John Mertic, Nick DiResta and
Josh Dwornick performed with great zeal for the winners. John Duderstadt
