Woodhaven 2 - Carlson 1
Congratulation to the Warriors of Woodhaven. They are League Champions of the
Downriver League in its inaugural season, with a league record of 14-1-1.
In the final regular season game, the Warriors played very well and had a very
comfortable win over the Marauders of Carlson It took a few minutes for the
Warriors to settle down, but after that they played their usual solid game,
despite having three defenders missing through injury. Woodhaven were on the
board at the 11 minute mark when Kaitlynn Clemens fired a rocket on goal from
just outside the 18 yard box. Limoza Islami had set Kaitlynn up for the shot on
goal. Play proceeded with the Warriors pressing constantly but the five or six
defensive formation used by Carlson was working well. The Warriors were very
unlucky not to get a couple more when they hit the crossbar and also the
goalpost. At the 35 minute mark, they did gain number two, when Brooke Austin
very calmly guided the ball with a one touch, into the net from close in,
catching a nice cross from Limoza Islami on the left wing. The Warriors defense
was not threatened very much at all and enjoyed considerable possession time.
Half time 2-0. It was Parents Night and also Seniors Night at half time in the
game. Play started in the second half with the Warriors pushing forward and
despite some excellent opportunities, were unable to grab another one. Woodhaven
were content with this score and all the players enjoyed considerable playing
time. A strange thing happened at the 24 minute mark of the second half. The
centre official blew the ball dead. Nobody knew what the call was and just stood
around to see what the ref. was giving. A Carlson player just stepped up and hit
the ball into the net from close in while the Warriors were waiting for the
ref.s claification. The Ref. let the goal stand. After that, the Marauders
pushed forward to try and tie the game but the Warriors defense remained tough
and held on to win the game and also the league championship. Great effort from
Warriors players, Holly Miller in goal, Courtney Lukasik, Whitney Vincenti,
Morgan Topolewski, Hilary Harubin and Marisa Cassel. Woodhaven finish the
regular season with a record of 17-1-2 o/all.

in half when Kelsey Topolewski scored in the 46th minute. McCracken netted her

The Lady Owls evened their record to 7-7-2 for the season with one match left
against Pinconning on Wednesday.
Gladwin struck first in the 11th minute when Melanie Smalley netted a long shot
over the outstretched arms of Oscoda goalkeeper, Kaylee Charters. Oscoda scored
next in the 17th minute when Jessica McCracken struck Dani Griffin in stride and
she found the net with her 22nd goal of the year. Oscoda took the lead in the
22nd minute when McCracken collected a Tori LaPointe pass and nailed it into the
goal. Oscoda went into the halftime with the one goal advantage.
The Flying G's entered the field for the second half with a renewed energy and
Smalley connected with Morgan Reid with a Corner Kick in the 49th minute to tie
up the match. Oscoda found the game winner in the 66th minute when LaPointe
passed the ball through the goal mouth and Asheley Suszek banged it home for the
win.
Conditions were hot with a blazing sun but as Osocoda senior midfielder, Maggie
Ungurean put it, "it was probably too hot to play a game tonight but everyone
worked extremely hard and I'm happy we won!" Coach Gary Schneider summed up the
match by stating, "I got to substitute the entire bench in and out during the
first half to keep the team fresh and we wore down a good Gladwin squad. It was
a solid team effort in all aspects of the game. We pretty much controlled the
match and played the way we wanted the game to go on a very hot day!"
Charters faced 21 shots by a freeshooting Gladwin team. She stopped 19 and
played well under pressure from all over the field. Katy Peacock led the defense
with 13 intercepts, 3 steals and 4 non-keeper saves. Chelsea Carraway had 7
intercepts and 6 steals. "Shannon Fowler, Melissa Yang, and Jerica Williams all
had a big defensive match with a lot of solid touches on the ball", stated
assistant coach Tim Colborn. "They picked up the slack for starter Mary Ruby who
missed the match due to a death in the family."

Tawas drew first blood when Taylor Inman netted the ball, her first of three, in
the 9th minute. Despite some sloppy play by the Owls, it took another 12 minutes
for Tawas to find the net again, with Inman scoring her second of the match.
Oscoda finally answered back in the 29th minute when Marie Stork fed a pass to
the Lady Owls leading scorer, Dani Griffin, who beat the Tawas keeper with a
blistering shot. Tawas regained their two goal edge when Audrey Thoryk scored
with seven minutes left in the half to post the Braves to a 3-1 halftime lead.
Oscoda jumped to life one minute into the second half when Griffin converted a
Penalty Kick but Inman tried to put the nail in the coffin when she netted her
third just one minute later. Oscoda picked up their sluggish play and answered
right back in the 44th minute when Griffin took a direct free kick, just outside
the Penalty Box, and bent a beautiful ball around the Tawas wall into the upper
corner of the net. Despite some spirited attacks by the Owls, they were unable
to score the equalizer and saw their record dip back below .500 to 6-7-2.

and Midfielder Tori LaPointe who stole 8 balls from Brave players and

Woodhaven 0 - Trenton 0 (2OT)
Typical hard fought and intense battle between these two Downriver rivals. The
first half was played in the middle of the field with neither team really
commanding control. Other than the Warriors hitting the post, there was not a
lot of quality opportunities. Half time 0-0. For a period early in the second
half, the Trojans dominated the play but the Woodhaven defense played well but
had a hard time breaking the Trojans momentum. Overall, the Trojans had the
majority of possession but it was the Warriors who came close to snatching the
winner, hitting the post another time but had three golden with only the keeper
to beat. These do come back to haunt. Two periods of OT were played, with
Woodhaven being the more dangerous team but no goals. Both defenses played well
and both keepers were outstanding. The game could have gone either way but a tie
was probably the fairest result. Holly Miller had the Warrior shut-out, her 12th
of the season and 10th in a row. Great effort from Warriors, Rachel Banks,
Candice Bresnahan, Courtney Lukasik,Whitney Vincenti, Amanda Barnes, Kaitlynn
Clemens and Holly Miller.

Notre Dame Prep 2 - Regina 0
On a deceptively cold and sunny afternoon at Regina, the Irish withstood a
young, athletic Regina squad prevailing with a 2-0 victory. The Irish got on the
board in the 17th minute when a Jenn Klei pass was deflected by a defender to
Stephanie Accurso, who struck a clean ball at the goal, fooling the goalkeeper
who mishandled it, and it went in for a 1-0 lead. The second half was a
different though and Regina was applying pressure to the NDP backline and
Katrina Stencel was called upon several times to chase attackers and close down
scoring chances. Freshman goalkeeper Alex arnoldy faced her toughest test of the
match with 10 minutes left on a strong shot that she grabbed and held on to.
Following that Regina outburst, Jenn Klei took a pass from Accurso and beat a
defender to get in the box where she was brought down and a penalty kick was
awarded. Lauren Jbara converted, and the Irish were up 2-0 and thats how it
ended. Both squads now head for the CHSL Quarterfinals this week on Thursday
with NDP as the #2 seed from the AA division and Regina as the #4 seed in the
Central Division.

Woodhaven
1 - Allen Park 0
Very hard fought game at Allen Park between two of the co-leaders in the
Downriver League. It was a very intense game that moved back and forth. The
Warriors of Woodhaven had the edge in the first half but the Jaguars defense
played excellent. Half time 0-0. Second half, the Warriors pushed even harder to
break the ice and did so at the seven minute mark when Brooke Austin put the
Warriors ahead. Limoza Islami had beaten a couple of defenders on the left wing,
the A.P. keeper had rushed out to cut the ball away just outside the 18 yard
box, but Limoza was able to control the ball and chip a nice ball into the goal
mouth, where Brooke was waiting to receive the ball and very wisely just run
through the ball with her body and into the net for the score. It was a long
second half for the Warriors, even though they hit the crossbar and also the
post, the Jags put up a terrific fight to gain a tie but the Warriors defense,
while tired from three games in four days, stood tall and keeper, Holly Miller
played a great game with a solid display of safe hands. She came up big on
several free-kicks and corners. The game could really have gone either way but
the Warriors were content with the solo goal win. Holly Miller had the shut-out,
her 11th of the season. The Warriors had great service from Courtney Lukasik,

half with a lot of intensity and really took it to the Marauders. Woodhaven
scored 145 seconds in and was continuing to dominate the Marauders in this
second half. Defensive breakdowns by the Marauders made the attacks from

Hard fought and very sporting match between the two local schools. While the

defense played a fantastic game, not allowing the Warriors to set up very many

immediately and opened the scoring at the six minute mark, when Kaitlynn Clemens
fired a tight shot past the keeper from about five yards to the left of the
goal. This was assisted by Candice Bresnahan. The Warriors continued with the
bulk of possession but still the Marauders would not fold, playing a very
disciplined defensive game. The Warriors did manage one more goal close to the

Oscoda 4 - Pinconning 2
The Oscoda Lady Owls soccer team broke out of their six game loosing streak on
Wednesday night in Pinconning, winning 4-2. The Owls took the lead just 2 1/2
minutes into the match when Katy Peacock connected with Marie Stork up the
middle and Stork beat the unprepared Spartan goalkeeper. Osocda scored again in
the 35th minute to take a 2-0 halftime lead. Leading goal scorer, Dani Griffin,
netted her 13th of the season unassisted. Pinconning did not lay down though.
The Spartans came roaring right back, with the wind behind them, and netted two
goals to draw even. Jennifer Czowski scored seven minutes into the half and
Samantha Mrozinski followed less than five minutes later on a Penalty Kick. That
goal awoke the Owl offense and they never looked back. Freshman Jessica
McCracken scored the winning goal at the 58th minute mark. Fellow Freshman
Kaylee Charters made a strong run between the Spartan defense and just before
running into trouble slid
the ball to a streaking McCracken who nailed the netting. Nine minutes later
Charters picked up a goal of her own when Stork stole the ball in the defensive
zone, loosing her cleat in the process, and dribbled upfield before hitting
Charters for the easy strike.
"We played sloppy soccer in the first half", said Coach Gary Schneider. "We
allowed Pinconning to tie the match before we settled down and finished strong
with good teamwork and hustle. We totally controlled the final 20 minutes of the
match even while going into a stiff wind. Freshman Tori LaPointe and Senior
Shannon Fowler both had strong matches and were a big part of the success we had
tonight."
The defense was led by Peacock with 11 intercepts. Mary Ruby added 9 with 4
steals. Fowler collected 7 intercepts. Melissa Yang tallied 5 steals and was

At NDP on senior night, the Irish jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 8 minutes into
the game when Lauren Jbara finished a pass from Jenn Klei. The pressure
continued for the rest of the half with NDP getting some very good looks at the

putting them up 2-0. Marisa Mancinotti was given the assist. Stencel then scored
again to put the Irish up 3-0 on a nice ball from Jenn Klei. The final 20
minutes saw the Irish fend off the young Falcon squad who roared back with 2
goals of their own to close the score to within one goal, but the Irish
conitnued to go at the Falcon goal again, forcing several more good saves from
the DC keeper In the end, NDP was just too much on this day and the prevailed
