Woodhaven  3  - Dearborn Crestwood  1
In a Mega Red Conference clash, the Woodhaven Warriors were on the road for their final away game of the regular season and had a strong desire to remain undefeated on the road.   They did gain a hard fought victory against a spunky Crestwood Chargers team.  The Warriors had already wrapped up the Mega Red Championship after their last contest.  The Warriors started well and fast, scoring their first goal in less than four minutes.  Bijanka Islami slid a nice ground ball between two defenders, Chelsea Barnes latched onto the ball, carried about 15 yards and as the keeper was advancing, slid the ball into the corner of the net to give the Warriors a fast start.  Play settled down with much midfield play.  The Warriors fired a lot of shots on the opposing goal but the Charger's keeper played well.  Despite a spirited first half for the Warriors, Crestwood tied the game with two seconds left on the clock.  The Chargers were awarded a penalty kick for a shoulder charge by a Warrior defender and converted with a high rising shot just out of the Woodhaven keeper's reach.  Half time 1-1.  Second half, the Warriors came out and pressed for a while but the Chargers fought back and played very well and fired a number of shots on the Warriors goal, but mostly all from farther out.  There was some goalmouth excitement at both ends. The game was winding down and it seemed like the Warriors had gained their second wind.  At the 33 minute mark, Chelsea Barnes received a nice pass from Kaitlynn Clemens.  Chelsea waltzed around two defenders and as the keeper advanced on her, she calmly chipped the ball over her head and into the open net, to complete her brace.  Time was running out but the Warriors were not ready to call it a day, they were awarded a free-kick from about 25 yards out. Kaitlynn Clemens fired home a rocket into the keeper's top left corner, to secure the full points. The Woodhaven season record stands at 15-2-1 o/all and 8-0-1 Mega Red.   Crestwood are 1-4-4 Mega.

Columbia Central 1 - Western 0 (SO)
The SMAA conference championship game was a physical, hard fought affair and fittingly went to double overtime and a shoot-out in a scoreless draw just like the meeting between these teams in the conference regular season.  Well played on both sides with Columbia out-shooting Western 8-5 with early pressure while Western applied some numbers forward late pressing for a regulation victory.
In the end, the defense on both sides refused to break and it was settled by kicks from the stripe.  Columbia prevailed 2-1 in the shoot-out and earned a co-championship with Western as each team finished conference play with just a single loss, to each other.
Columbia Central sophomore goalkeeper Emily White recorded her 9th shut-out of the season and also made the game winning save on Western's final kick attempt.  Western keeper Quinn McGill played well during the match as well, making a couple of key saves to keep Western's hopes alive.

Dexter 3 - Chelsea 2
The Dexter / Chelsea rivalry is a special one that brings out the best competitiveness from both teams.  Both teams were pumped up and the spectators knew they were in for a treat.  Midway in to the first half after both teams pressured eachothers defenses, Kristi Hughes struck a great ball from 25 yards out that the Bulldog keeper had no chance at.  Just over a minute later, Chelsea equalized.  With eleven minutes left in the first half, freshman Jaimie Verbal took a ball from Hughes and put the Dreads up again.  The Bulldogs weren't able to answere right away, but did with four minutes remaining in the half for a 2-2 score.
The only tallie in the second half turned out to be the game winner when Brittany Walls took a ball from Emma Monaghan and battled through two Chelsea defenders for the game winner.  With each team having golden chances through-out the game, the rightfull end could have been a tie, but the Dreads did the extra things neccesary for the win.
Coach Forrester on the Chelsea game: "Stressful to coach but a very entertaining game for all of the fans.  We did very well to create very good chances and looked better at finishing the chances.  Our players did very well to hold up what is good about the Dexter soccer tradition.  It was unfortunate that individuals or an individual, NOT REPRESENTING DEXTER, vandalized the Chelsea field prior to the match.  I have found that this rivalry brings out the best and the worst. It's not representive of Dexter Athletics.  We have a good, investigative school newspaper, it would be nice to see them step up to the challenge of exposing the vandles of this offense and those that happened at our own school." Dexter 5-5-4 (5-2-3 SEC) - Chelsea 8-3-2 (5-3-1 SEC).

Woodhaven  1 - Trenton  0
The only meeting of these two local rivals this season which featured the Mega Red Conference Champion elect Woodhaven against the Mega White Champions elect, Trenton, turned out to be a bit of a low key affair.   The Warriors of Woodhaven started early and applied constant pressure on the Trenton Trojans with nice ball movement but the Trenton defense played well and forcing the Warriors to shoot from farther out, thus reducing their effectiveness.  The Trenton keeper was superb, stopping some really tricky shots.  The Warriors keeper was not tested very much but did well on dangerous corners. The Warriors were winning most of the balls and the Trojans were doing a lot of chasing but it just amounted to mostly mid-field play.  Half time 0-0.  Second half, Trenton continued with their five man midfield and a couple of times they were dangerous with their two up front forwards.  The Trojan keeper continued to shut-down the Warriors goal machine.  The Warriors had plenty of possession but at times it looked like neither team was concerned about winning the game. It wasn't a particularly fast game, the third of the week for both teams.  It looked like the game would be scoreless until the Warriors notched a goal with only four minutes remaining.  The Warrior's hero of the game, once again was Kaitlynn Clemens, who fired home from a bad angle and caught the Trojan keeper off balance.  This followed a nice pass from Renee Morrison. Tough break for the Trojan keeper who played so great throughout the game.  The Warrior shut-out went to Shelby Jackson, who, while not too busy, comfortably handled some dangerous corners and free-kicks.  This was Shelby's 11th shut-out of the season.  The Warriors had very good performances from Brooke Austin, Kaytia Oberdorf, Presley Hana, Courtney Lukasik and Candice Bresnahan.   Woodhaven season record stands at 14-2-1 o/all...Trenton are 12-5-0 o/all.

Dexter 2 - East Lansing 2
The Dreadnaughts traveled to a high powered East Lansing Trojans for a strong non-conference match-up that proved to be worth the admissions fee.
A passionate rivalry between East Lansing and the Dreads stems from the men's side beginning with their victory over the Trojans in the 2006 shoot-out victory and last years regional victory.  Dexter was part of East Lansing's tournament last year but would not face them as Portage Northern defeated them setting up the Huskies finals loss to the Dreads.
Dexter's play started off as being a bit conservative, looking for their chances to go forward and attack.  With both teams battling and gaining solid chances, each team defended well and went in to half-time with the 0-0 score.
The Dreads showed a bit more energy with the start of the second half and scored the first goal of the game ten minutes in.  Ariel DeYoung received a pass from Emma Monaghan to give the Dreads a 1-0 lead.  Ten minutes later Emma Monaghan added another goal for a 2-0 lead, assisted by Ariel Star.
As the game entered it's late stages, it looked like it would be a win for the Dreads, but with eight minutes remaining in the game, the Trojans got within one with their first goal of the game.  Two minutes later they tied the game when a ball played in off of a free-kick wasn't properly cleared and allowed East Lansing to score and ending the game with a 2-2 draw.
Coach Forrester on the East Lansing game: "We had the game in hand, we just couldn't find a way to keep it.  This team tends to find an extra gear when it plays the better teams, we just need to be able to close 'em out to maintain the win.  Monaghan had a great game...she combines well with Brittany Walls to be able to take over a game." Dexter 3-5-4 / East Lansing 7-3-7.

The strategy paid off as the Warrior's Rachel  Banks was able to land a direct kick into the net at the 3:19 mark. This proved to be the game winner as the  exhausted, but well conditioned Warrior's, earned the Championship with a 1-0 win. Oscoda falls to 5-7.  The Lady Owls will host Ogemaw Heights on Monday at 5:00pm.

Woodhaven  1  - Dearborn  0

The Warriors of Woodhaven went on the road to Dearborn and came away with a tough but well earned win.  It was a well played contest and both keepers and midfields excelled.  Woodhaven had the bulk of the pressure and opportunities but the Pioneers also came close at times.  The first half was fast and intense and also exciting with Woodhaven having some golden opportunities but nothing in the net.  The Pioneer's moved the ball around well and were a great threat from their corner kicks.  Half time 0-0.  Second half, despite being down to two subs, the Warriors got a second wind and pressed continuously for the win, while not slowing their pace.  The constant pressure almost produced a couple of goals for Woodhaven with a free shot at an empty goal and clear breakaway but the Pioneer's keeper stood tall and made some great saves.  The Woodhaven keeper also played great and thwarted the Pioneer threat from the dangerous corner kicks.  The Warriors finally nailed one with only eight minutes left in the game when Renee Morrison slid a through ball to Kaitlynn Clemens down the left wing.  Kaitlynn picked up the pass at the half way line, cut down the wing, went around two defenders, cut inside, past another defender and as the keeper rushed out to the top of the 18 yard box, slid it into the far corner with a calmly struck ground ball.  Beautiful effort and great desire considering how tired she had to be.  Kaitlynn  was the Warrior's hero tonight.  Lauren Badalamente, Brook Austin, Bijanka Islami and Chelsea Barnes had brilliant games for the Warriors while keeper Shelby Jackson turned in another super performance and gaining her 9th shut-out of the season.  The Woodhaven season record stands at 11-2-1 o/all and 5-0-1 Mega Red.   Dearborn are 2-2-2 Mega Red.

Woodhaven 1 - Garden City  0

The Warriors took home all three points in this Mega Red Conference affair.  It was a rude awakening for the Warriors playing on the road where the field had 8" inch tall grass, compared to their artificial field surface at home.  The Warriors played well in the first half but both teams had some nice opportunities.  The Warriors hit the crossbar once while the Cougars came very close to gaining a goal on a couple of occasions. It was very intense but very fair play by both teams.  The Warriors took the lead at the 27 minute mark when Renee Morrison found the top corner from her free kick from about 28 yards out.  Second half, the Cougars were the better team but the Woodhaven defense and defense it was, held on courageously. It was a very competitive contest with very little between the team and possibly a tie might have been a fair result considering the effort by the Cougars in the second half.  Courtney Lukasik had a great defensive game for the Warriors while keeper Shelby Jackson did great in her pursuit of her 8th shut-out of the season.  The Warriors season record stands at 10-3-1 o/all and 4-0-1 Mega Red....Garden City are 0-5-0 in Mega Red.

Birmingham Seaholm 3 - North Farmington 2

Birmingham Seaholm defeated North Farmington in a thriller tonight at Maple field.  Senior Captain Jackie Wojewoda combined once again with Senior Captain Haley Silver for the game winner with under one minute to go.  Seaholm scored early in the first half when senior Eden Cooney put one in off a redirect from Junior Hallie Taylor.  North Farmington tied the game with a PK before the half.  In the second half North Farminton went ahead  with an early goal and looked to hang on for the win.  The Maples kept up the offensive pressure late in the game when senior Lizzie Grobbel put one by the North Farmington keeper.  With under a minute to go in the contest, Silver sprinted to retrieve the ball and sent a corner kick into the box for the Wojewoda header for the win.  Senior Captain Rachel Reem and junior Bridget Laverty played tough to control the middle for Seaholm .  Seaholm moves to 2-2-3 in OAA White action.

Portage Northern 2   - Marshall 0
Portage Northern's Samantha Kay scored both goals to hold off a determined Marshall squad 2-0. In a very physical game Kay scored her first goal off a free kick that eluded the Marshall keeper to the far post. Standish-Sterling 3 - Oscoda 1

It took just 16 seconds to seal the fate of the Oscoda Lady Owls soccer team on Monday night as they fell to Standish-Sterling, 3-1.  Standish took the opening kickoff and wormed their way between the Oscoda starters and scored to the amazement of all who watched.  The Owls never fully recovered and seemed out of sorts for the rest of the match.  The Owls did manage to tie the score in the 25th minute when Chelsea Carraway redirected Krystin Inman's corner kick into the net.  The Owls picked up the pace for the rest of the half but were unable to punch in another goal.  After the half the Owls returned to their sluggish play and took only 3 second half shots on the Panther's goal.  With the match looking like it was headed for overtime, the Panthers made two strong pushes and found the net in the 75th and 77th minutes to ice the match.  Shelby Gainforth and Karina Pierce scored the first and last Standish tallies.  The Panthers improve to 2-6-2 and the Owls fall to 4-6.
"We were not in the right frame of mind before the game even started", was Oscoda Head Coach Gary Schneider's observation.  "They just plain wanted the ball more than we did tonight!"  Sophomore Katy Peacock commented that, "We came in too cocky and gave up that easy goal.  We have to prepare better before each match."
Peacock had a good match finishing with 11 steals and 10 intercepts.  Senior Katia Kotula was very active in the defensive zone, ending her 80 minutes of play with 24 intercepts and 5 steals.

Riverview  1- Woodhaven  0

First game for both teams in the Woodhaven Tournament.  The Woodhaven Warriors moved the ball around very well but lack of finishing was very costly.  The Riverview defense and goalkeeper excelled in shutting down a tired looking Warrior offense. Despite lopsided possession, the Warriors let the game slip by conceding a goal with only 45 seconds left in the game.  Riverview persevered throughout the game and came away with a nice single goal victory, which was actually the difference in the tournament.

Woodhaven  3 - Carlson  0

Well played and a very sporting match with the Carlson Mauraders needing a win to take the tournament.  The Woodhaven Warriors saved their best for last.  It was a very entertaining game with the Warriors looking the sharper of the two teams, so late in the day. The Marauders fought well but were unlucky as the Warriors took the lead at the six minute mark when Bijanka Islami hit a high shot to the keeper left for the go ahead goal.  This was assisted by Lauren Badalamente. At the 23 minute, Renee Morrison scored with a high shot over the keepers head from about 15 yards out, assisted by Kaytia Oberdorf.  Half time 2-0.  Second half the Marauder's fought hard to get back in the game but the Warriors turned on the style with some excellent movement, on and off the ball.  Less than a minute left in the game, Woodhaven were awarded a penalty kick, which Renee Morrison converted.  Shelby Jackson had the Warrior shut-out, her 7th of the season.  The Woodhaven season record stands at 9-2-1 o/all and 3-0-1 Mega Red.

Though the young Cougars played tough throughout the game, Two goals scored by Katie McNulty in the first three minutes of the game, gave Lakeland the confidence to work the ball around the field to create many scoring opportunities. McNulty's first and second goal were setup in similar fashion. The first of which was crossed in on the ground from the right wing by Amy Carlton. The second goal was an airborne cross from the right by Jessica Bidock with McNulty heading the ball cleanly inside the near post. Lakeland would get several more good opportunities in the first half but didn't score again until four minutes before the half. A corner kick that was sent to the 18 was controlled by Lauren Klapec and passed back for a well placed shot by Jillian Draheim for the 3rd goal. Seventeen minutes into the second half, Kristine Graham intercepted a pass by the Cougar Defense around the 25 yard line. She made a few nice moves in toward the goal and slotted Lakeland's 4th goal past the goalkeeper. With less than two minutes in the game, Amy Carlton got her second assist by dribbling into the end line around a Cougar defender and passing to Katie McNulty who was centered on the 6 yard line. McNulty's follow-up goal was her third of the night. With about 8 minutes remaining in the match, Thurston got the lone goal of the game and beat the Marauders 0-1. Playing real good for the Marauders were Anna Blakeslee in net, Evie Cramton at striker, Michaela Jestat at center midfield and Krissy Venier at outside midfield.
