MHSAA Division 1 Champions - Portage Central

2009 MHSAA Division 1 Champions - Portage Central

Division 1
Portage Central 3 - Shelby Twp. Eisenhower 2 (OT)

By John K. Schroder

Portage Central senior Shannon Bennett headed in a corner kick serve from Taylore Peterson just 39 seconds into overtime to power unbeaten Central to a 3-2 victory over Utica Eisenhower in the Division 1 state championship at Troy Athens on Saturday.

Top ranked Central closes a remarkable season at 27-0-2 to become the first team from the west side of the state to win a Division 1 girls soccer state championship. No. 10 Eisenhower (18-3-2) was the first team from Macomb County to play in a state final since the MHSAA began sponsorship in 1983. The Mustangs have one state championship in Division 2 (2000 over Madison Heights Bishop Foley) and one runners-up trophy from 1998 (Birmingham Groves)—all in overtime!

The 27 wins this season is a new school record eclipsing the old mark of 23 wins set in three consecutive seasons at the turn of the century in 1999, 2000, and 2001.

Bennett scored her ninth goal of the season and Peterson earned her team-leading 27th helper on the Mustangs 10th corner kick of the game.

“Jamie Morton made the run (to setup the corner kick) and Peterson sent me a beautiful ball and it worked out just how we had planned it,” Bennett said of the serve that sailed beyond everyone and into a set play where three Mustangs were stacked awaiting the kick about 12 yards out from the Eisenhower goal. “I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

Peterson had nine previous corner kicks in the game that failed to initiate a goal in regulation time. Did the coach have anything to say?

“He (Pat Norman) just told us to keep working on them. He asked if Taylore was playing the ball right,” Bennett said. “She was giving us variations to throw them off and we just had to judge them right. I guess that’s what I did. I judged it right on that one and sent it in. It was awesome.”

Eisenhower coach Mehrdad Nekoogar didn’t like what he saw as the championship-winning play unfolded. “We didn’t do a good job marking their players on that corner kick. The corner kick was actually in a good spot right on the far post and they had four players there. For some reason we didn’t mark them and they took advantage of it. Those things happen.”

The deciding goal came on the first shot of the period. No surprise to that since a goal was scored on the first shot of each period.

Making its third Finals appearance, Central welcomed Macomb County’s finest to the Finals when Paige Wester snuck in off the right flank and buried an unassisted goal 41 seconds into the game. It was Wester’s 18th goal of the year. Alyssa Tomassi drew the Eagles even on their first shot of the game at 1:43 when she converted an Aubrey Sudomier pass.

Central’s Lauren Brown sandwiched an unassisted  goal between two shots off the crossbar when she ripped a 15 yarder that deflected off an Eagles defender and changed directions and went past Ike keeper Becky Lipinski for a 2-1 Mustangs lead at 12:16.

Two minutes and 39 seconds after the intermission, Sudomier struck for her 13th goal of the season and the Eagles were even at 2-all. Allie Misner fired a left wing cross that Central keeper Samantha Bowditch got a hand on but Sudomier banged in the loose ball to knot the game.

The Eagles began to possess the ball more in the second stanza but shots were at a premium. Besides the goal, Eisenhower had just one slow roller at the goal in the half. Central outshot Eisenhower, 13-8, in the game. Lipinski and Bowditch each made two first half saves and none in the second half.

The win was career number 407 for Central’s coach Pat Norman who has guided the Mustangs for 24 seasons.

“We knew the first 5 minutes and the last 5 minutes of the halves are the most critical times because that’s when people are letting down or just not ready,” Norman said. “The first 5 minutes is the time when the goals are scored.”

And when championships are won.

Portage Central finishes the season at 27-0-2, while Eisenhower ends it's fine season at 18-3-1.  A Few More Photos   Game Summary

2009 MHSAA Division 2 Champions - Bloomfield Hills Marian

2009 MHSAA Division 2 Champions - Bloomfield Hills Marian

Bloomfield Hills Marian 1 - East Grand Rapids 0

By John K. Schroder

The air horns were blaring as a salute from their fans as top ranked Bloomfield Hills Marian edged No.3 East Grand Rapids, 1-0, in the Division 2 state championship at Troy Athens on Saturday. The title is the third in six years for the Mustangs who also captured back-to back titles in 2003-04. Marian lost to EGR in the 2002 championship game. EGR also won back-to-back crowns in Division 3 in 2000 and 2001 before moving up to Division 2.

Junior Elizabeth Doman scored the game’s only goal with 7:07 remaining as she ran under a 35-yard free kick serve from senior Courtney Andries and headed a shot past EGR keeper Greer Bratschie.

The goal broke open an anticipated defensive struggle and was the 14th shot set up after Marian’s Sara Zawacki was fouled during a very physical game.

“I just saw it coming over. Courtney put a great ball in. I was happy that I wasn’t offsides,” Doman said of her 10th tally of the year and championship clincher. “I saw it go into the back of the net and I love seeing that happen. It’s just a mind blower. I felt absolutely so proud and everybody piled on me. It’s a great experience to see it. It’s overwhelming and the feeling is incredible.”

Marian (22-2-1) carried the territorial advantage for most of the game and limited the Pioneers to seven shots while returning 15. Both teams were a little erratic as senior keeper Whitney Sarkis made just one first half save in the game for Marian and Bratschie recorded three first half saves. Neither goalie had to make a save in the second half.

“I was surprised the refs didn’t call a lot more (fouls), but that’s what you expect in a state championship game,” Doman said. “It’s going to be physical and it’s going to rough. In the end, we pulled it out so I’m happy. We worked hard for the entire game and I love all of them. We wouldn’t have gotten here without every effort by each individual on the team.”

EGR’s only chance of the game came in the 9th minute when Kelly Foy ripped a shot off the crossbar. Marian’s Anna Cicerone almost put Marian on the scoreboard when her 25 yard blast caromed off the crossbar with 11:16 to play in the first half.

“We had some good opportunities and good combinations, but overall we just never really got into our flow,” said EGR coach Hollie Bonnema. “Give credit to Marian because they played great.”

Marian took control in the second half. Doman missed on a header 9:15 after the half and Caroline Bodiya shanked a 15-yarder wide left less than three minutes later. Zawacki sent a 18-yarder rolling wide left with 2:38 to play.

Sarkis posted her 15th shutout for Marian and the senior had a strong hold on the championship trophy. “This is so unbelievable. The defense was solid today. They always come out solid and that was the key again. Everybody played great,” Sarkis said.

Marian had yielded only nine goals all year and EGR had limited its opposition to just 14 in 24 games so it was no surprise that the teams fought through midfield congestion for most of the cloudy afternoon.

Coach Barry Brodsky was happy to see the championship goal go in for Marian.

“You work so hard you don’t think this can really happen. Just then it happens and you’re so happy that it’s hard to describe,” said Brodsky.

Marian ends their season at 22-2-1, while East Grand Rapids finishes at 20-5-0.  A Few More Photos          Game Summary

Flint Powers Catholic 2 - Beverly Hills Country Day 1  (2OT)
At Williamston, #3 Powers Catholic beat #1 Detroit Country Day 2-1.  The casual reader will see this as a mild upset, but make no mistake, the better side won this match, on this night.  From the opening whistle, Powers Catholic owned the better part of play.  Completely dominating the midfield, and consistently winning 50-50 balls and balls in-the-air. Powers speed and athleticism pressured the back line of DCD all night.  The first 40-minutes ended 0-0.  But it did not take Powers long to get on-the-board in the second half.  In the 49th minute, Mackenzie Mora slotted a diagonal ball down the right side to Allie Saville, who got it in-stride, touched it towards the end line, turned the corner and beat the DCD keeper with a high curling ball that caught the bottom side netting, just inside the far-left post; 1-0 Powers.  After that goal, DCD went exclusively to their long vertical game, probing the Powers back and trying to spring the speedy Addison for a score.  That strategy paid-off in the 81st minute, when a long vertical ball was misplayed by the Powers defense, and Addison went 1 v 1 with the Powers keeper, beating her with a low curling shot to the near post; 1-1.

In the first overtime Powers had several chances that were denied by the DCD keeper.  In the 94th minute, Powers' all-state forward, Kate Howrath, struck a high shot from just inside the box that the DCD keeper saved and held to end the first overtime. In the second overtime, Powers completely dominated a physically tired DCD side.  Both sides were feeling the heat, as several players were helped off due to cramping and exhaustion.  Powers' depth definitely played a roll in the final outcome.  In the 109th minute, Powers' Brittany Tenus slide a ball out to Mackenzie Mora on the right wing, Mora beat the DCD defender to the outside, turned on the end line and hit a cross to the box. As another DCD defender closed, seeing that the cross was going to find a streaking Kate Howrath, the DCD defender inexplicably touched the ball down with her hand in-the-box.

In the 109th minute, Powers found their Dream Team Forward, Kate Howrath, with the ball on-the-dot, and a redeeming trip to the Finals on her foot.  On the referees whistle, Howrath calmly struck the game winner just under the bar, in the far right corner - DCD keeper had no chance.  Powers 2 - DCD 1.

Powers moves on to face Unity Christian on Saturday, in the D-III finals.  This will be a rematch of arguably one of the greatest finals ever played, when in 2007, Unity Christian beat Powers 3-2 in overtime on three Haybour goals.

Flint Powers Catholic 7 - Freeland 0

In the D-III Regional Final at Montrose, Powers Catholic overwhelmed Freeland 7-0.  Powers, which dominated play throughout the first-half, was held scoreless by a determined Freeland squad until All-State Forward Kate Howrath scored off a cross from Jessica Rolls in the 26th minute.  The game remained that way until Powers scored twice in the last 90-seconds (Buck and Genord)of the half to take a 3-0 at the break.  Joining Powers' Dream-Team Forward, Kate Howrath, in scoring were Mckenzie Mora (2), Katie Buck (2), Jessica Genord, and Allie Saville. Freeland's only shot of the match came on a penalty kick late in the second half. Reserve keeper, Christina Rodriquez, dove to her right to push the shot wide and spoil Freeland's bid to avoid the shutout. Both squads are to be congratulated for a well-played match that saw no cards and few whistles for fouls.

Woodhaven  2 - Dearborn  1
District 7 Final at Woodhaven saw two well matched team meet for the third time this season.  Both teams played very cautiously and very tentatively.  Woodhaven had some nice shots on the Dearborn Pioneers goal but the Pioneers keeper played very well.  A lot of mid-field play before Warrior, Brooke Austin fired home after a magnificent individual effort.  This was at the 21st minute mark.  Brooke, the smallest, but one of the fastest on the Warrior squad, received the ball from Presley Hana about 40 yards out.  She in turn beat a Pioneer defender and with a burst of speed, raced up the middle of the field with a defender on either side, managed to maintain possession and as the keeper rushed out, Brooke stroked a low ball home from around 16 yards out to catch the empty net.  It was getting warm out there and this required frequent subbing.  Half time 1-0. Second half started fast and both teams pressed and fatigue started to show early in both teams.  The Warriors only allowed a few long range shots on goal, which keeper Shelby Jackson covered comfortably.  At the 29th minute mark, Kaitlynn Clemens fired home from 16 yards after receiving a nice pass from Bijanka Islami on the right side. Bijanka won 50/50 ball, beat a defender and as another advanced towards her, slid a pass to an unmarked Kaitlynn who carried the ball just inside the eighteen and ripped a rocket into to top right corner, to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.  The Warriors were content to protect their lead but a through ball from the Pioneers went to Andi Myres who fired past the Woodhaven keeper, to ruin her attempt for a 14th shut-out of the season, but remains tied for the school record.  Warriors team excelled in their strategy to be victors over a hard fighting Pioneer team. The Woodhaven record stands at 19-2-1 while  Dearborn slipped to 9-10-2.

Nice win for the Woodhaven Warriors who now advance to set up a rematch of last years District Final with Dearborn.  Both teams began play very cautiously but the Warriors carried more of the play and were more of a threat.  The Lady Titan's keeper, Kerry Martenis, was called upon to make some early stops.  Nice ball movement from the Warriors but the Titans defense played well.  As expected, tournament games do create a different type strategy, thus setting up a lot of midfield play.  The Warriors scored at the 32 minute mark when Kaitlynn  Clemens, lurking on the six yard line and standing all alone, received a nice ground ball from Renee Morrison who had carried the ball down the right wing and then cut a nice sweet pass through a bunch of legs to Kaitlynn, who just one touched the ball into the net.  The keeper was caught at the wrong end of the goal.  Half time 1-0.  The Woodhaven squad carried the lone goal lead into the half and immediately began to press to add to their tally, well aware of how critical the next goal would be for either team.  The Warrior's pressure paid off when good hustle paid dividends.  Lauren Badalamente worked hard to win the ball from a defender in the corner, slid a pass ball back to  Chelsea Barnes who side-stepped a Titan, cut the ground ball inside to Kaitlynn Clemens, who then beat a defender and from 18 yards out, ripped one into the keepers top left corner.  This goal came at the third minute of the half and established the Warriors remaining control. Southgate had a couple of nice shots of the Warrior's keeper but from farther out and Shelby Jackson was able to control with ease.  The Warriors, although content with the two goal lead, continued to cautiously press forward but not opening up too much.  Shelby Jackson had the Warriors shut-out, her 13th of the season.  Good games from Warrior players,  Shelby Mathers, Kaitlynn Clemens, Kailey Smedo, Kelly Rossi, Bijanka Islami, Brooke Austin, Courtney Lukasik and Presly Hana.  The Woodhaven season record stands at 18-2-1.

Plymouth Christian 2 - University Liggett 1
Plymouth Christian visited University Liggett on Tuesday for the first round of districts. The game started off as a very tough and competitive game. PCA scored first on a penalty kick after one of PCA's forwards was tripped in the ULS box. Senior Brooke Williams made the penalty kick attempt. Shortly after ULS answered back with a beautiful shot that faded to the back post over PCA's goalkeepers head. The second half was very tough and physical and both teams did very well in keeping each other from scoring. The 2 teams then proceeded into overtime. After two overtime periods the score was still tied 1-1. PCA and ULS then moved into a shootout. PCA's players were confident but couldn't help but think back to their last 3 post-seasons that were ended due to loses in shootouts. PCA and ULS went through their first group of 5 shooters with both teams making 2/5. Both keepers did amazing jobs at stopping some pretty tough shots. In the second shootout period ULS went 0/5 and PCA went 1/5 with freshman Amy Zinn knocking in the game winner. PCA moves on to face Lutheran Westland on Friday for the district championship.

Woodhaven  4  - Taylor Truman  0
District 7. Well played game by both teams.  The Woodhaven Warriors had the edge in play and possession but the Truman Cougars fought well, putting up a very nice defensive game.  The Truman keeper made some nice saves from some quality shots from the Warriors forwards.  At the other end, Shelby Jackson had to make some critical saves to keep the Warriors level in the game.  Woodhaven broke the ice at the 7 minute mark when Bijanka Islami fired home a high well placed free kick from about 24 yards out but the cross wind made it difficult for the Truman keeper.  Presley Hana smacked home a left footed shot from close in, after picking up a rebound on Brooke Austin' shot on goal.  This was at the 16 minute mark.  Truman settled down and played well, not allowing the Warriors very many opportunities.  Half time 2-0.  The Warriors were aware how critical the next goal would be for either team.  They came out, passed beautifully right down the field and Shelby Mathers rattled home a great shot from a give and go with Renee Morrison with only 20 seconds gone in the half.  Woodhaven would not sit back and gloat.  They pushed forward and scored again at the two minute mark, when Renee Morrison fired a nice shot home from about 8 yards out, and a nice pass from Shelby Mathers.  Truman had two extremely dangerous forwards and really kept the Warriors defense on their toes for the rest of the game.  Shelby Jackson had the Warrior shut-out, her 12th of the season.  Great effort from the visiting Cougars. Exceptional display from Warriors players, Renee Morrison, Bijanka Islami, Kelly Rossi, Courtney Lukasik, Lauren Badalamente, Presley Hana, Brooke Austin and Erin Decker.  The Woodhaven season record stands at 17-2-1. Troy Athens 1 - Rochester 0
In a match-up more befitting a state quarterfinal, these two top ranked Division 1 and OAA rivals squared off in the opening round of district play at Athens on Tuesday night. The Falcons from Rochester carried the opening 40 minutes and forced Athens keeper Jenna O'Dell to make a diving stop midway through the half to keep the game at zeroes. The Redhawks from Athens came out as a much more confident quad after intermission and possessed the ball for much of the final 40 minutes. With 25 minutes to play, Tiffany Bell flicked a Jordan Penz throw in to a wide open Jackie Short who buried her team leading 13th goal of the season for the game winner. The Athens backline, led by Megan Swiderski, Marisa Kozikowski, Chelsea Miller, and Penz made the goal stand up in front of O'Dell who recorded her 9th shutout and the teams' 13th of the year. Athens moves on at 16-3-2 to play Utica Ford while Rochester bows out at 9-4-4.

Oscoda was in command early in the match.  The first 15 minutes were a feeling out period as the two squads, who did not face each other this season, checked each other out.  Oscoda took control when defender, Katia Kotula, banged a long pass from her defensive zone over the Viking defense.  Oscoda leading scorer, Dani Griffin, ran onto the ball and blasted Oscoda's first goal home.  Oscoda continued the pressure with Griffin getting many opportunities to shoot.  Oscoda took a two goal lead at the 29th minute mark when Griffin shot and Chelsea Carraway collected the rebound and tucked the ball into the net.  Three minutes later, Grayling cut Oscoda's lead when they rushed the net and beat Oscoda's goalkeeper, Nicole Jackson.  Oscoda enjoyed a 2-1 lead at the half.
Grayling came out strong in the second half, building on the momentum of their late first half goal.  They kept the Owls on their heels, allowing Oscoda only 2 shots in the second half.  Grayling tied the score in the 66th minute and won the match with the penalty kick in the 88th.
