Wartburg 1 - Calvin 0 (OT)
NCAA III TOURNAMENT MEN'S SOCCER SECOND ROUND
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - A "golden goal" off the foot of junior Scott Hill
allowed the Knights of Wartburg (IA) to pull off a second round 1-0 upset
victory over the Knights of Calvin College Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field.
Wartburg (19-1-2) advances to a sectional semifinal where it will face either
Wilmington (OH) or Wheaton (IL).
Hill's game-winning tally came with just 8:40 left in the second overtime
session as he beat Calvin goalkeeper Joe Westra with a low hard shot just
inside the near post. Hill's shot from the left wing was set up by a
well-placed chip pass from sophomore Brent Schuchman, allowing Wartburg to
strike off the quick counterattack.
"It was a perfect pass and Hill made a great diagonal run to set up the
shot," said Wartburg coach Jim Conlon. "We were prepared for a battle
against a Calvin team that we have the utmost respect for and we're just
thrilled to sneak out of here with a victory."
Calvin out shot Wartburg 14-11 and held the majority of the quality scoring
chances in Saturday's match but Wartburg goalkeeper Collin Lane was superb
with five saves as he kept his team in the game.
"Collin was outstanding," said Conlon. "Calvin had a chance to put us
away in the first half but once Collin starting making saves, the momentum
started to build and turn our way."
Calvin out shot Wartburg 13-8 in regulation time but Wartburg held a 3-1 edge
in overtime.
Calvin nearly scored in the opening five minutes on a one-timer by junior Matt
Cosnek but Lane was able to punch the ball away.
Calvin nearly scored again in the 33rd minute on a free kick by senior Joel
Veldhouse that curled around a wall of Warburg defenders and clanged off the
far goalpost.
A few minutes earlier, Veldhouse had a 20-yard rip that just sailed over the
Wartburg crossbar.
In the second half, Cosnek came close again, this time on a header in the box
but Lane was able to reach back and make a somersault save. Lane came up with
one more clutch save with 18 minutes left in regulation, deflecting a 20-yard
bullet by Calvin junior Maurice Wright just over the cross bar.
In extra time, Wartburg began to pressure and came close twice in the first
overtime session before finally breaking through on the game-winner by Hill.
The goal was the first against sixth-ranked Calvin since a 1-0 loss to Hope
on October 12, a span of more than 750 minutes.
Calvin entered Saturday's match with the nation's third-best scoring
defense while Wartburg came in with the nation's second-best scoring
offense.
Wartburg also had the nation's 12th-best scoring defense and the defense of
the visiting Knights proved to be the key.
"It's a difficult way to end the season," said Calvin men's soccer
coach Chris Hughes. "We had several quality scoring chances but we
couldn't put one in the back of the net and Wartburg did. Wartburg's
goalkeeper played a big role in keeping us off the scoreboard. He was very
good this afternoon."
Calvin is now 3-5 in NCAA III Tournament play with the Knights of Calvin
making five appearances in the national tournament.
The Knights of Wartburg now advance to the sectional round of the NCAA III
Tournament for the first time in school history.

Schoolcraft College 7 - Elgin 1
The Saturday win allowed us to advance to the championship game on Sunday against the Region 4 champs, Elgin (IL). Coming off a very strong game on Saturday, SC dispatched Elgin despite a very aggressive effort by them rather handily with a 7-1 thumping. Kyle LaPorte (Churchill) on an assist by Tiffani Tuzzolino (Sterling Heights Stevenson) started the beginning of the end for Elgin. She was followed by Jess Saba (Crestwood) who had 2 goals on the day. Natalie Thomas and Lindsey Turkington gave her the ball. Kara Jean (Dearborn) staked us to a 3-1 first half lead.
The scoring parade continued the 2nd half with Nicole Saigh scoring goals number 4 and 5. Nicole had 4 goals over the weekend. Natalie Thomas chipped in with her 3rd assist of the day and Casey Hoover (Walled Lake Western) for her 2nd of the game.
Leigh Anne Myers hit for our final goal. Andrea Dun went the distance in goal.
SC had two very impressive wins over the weekend to retain our District D championship and earn a return trip to the National Tournament. Our record stands at 22-0-0 going into Nationals which are November 18-21 in Phoenix, Arizona. We are ranked #1 on the NSCAA national poll. This will be our 4th time out the last 5 years that Schoolcraft has advanced to the national Tournament.

University 2 - Madonna 0
On Friday the Cougars faced off with a Madonna team that was looking to
avenge a 2-1 loss to the SAU earlier in the season. The Cougars were
ready to play and jumped all over the Crusaders early in the match, creating
several good opportunities to score in the opening 20 minutes of the game.
SAU was unable to solve Crusader goalkeeper Diana Kaip however, and the match
moved to halftime at 0-0.
The beginning of the second half was more of the same from the Cougars.
After making a long run up
from
the back, Diana Humphrey beat the last Madonna defender and was taken down
from behind in the Crusader box. Megan Bauhof (left) converted the
resulting penalty kick to give SAU a 1-0 in the 52nd minute of play.
Madonna began to desperately throw players forward trying to find the
equalizer after the Cougar goal, and the Cougars eventually made them pay
the price for it when Molly Comber found Crissie Strohmaier all alone in the
Madonna box and fed her the ball. Strohmaier calmly slid the ball under
the diving Kaip for her 16th goal of the season, providing SAU with all the
insurance they would need. Kristin Faraday picked up 8 saves to earn the
shut out.
On Saturday, the Lady Cougars faced off with
Indiana
Wesleyan
University
, who beat
Cornerstone
University
3-1 in the other semi-final match on Friday. The Cougars were looking to
improve on the disappointing tie that they suffered in the two teams earlier
meeting.
Again the Cougars came out ready to play and Strohmaier was sharp early, as
she took fellow forward Candice Jaloszynski's pass and beat the IWU goalkeeper
high to the rear post in the opening minute of play to give the Cougars a 1-0
cushion.
IWU turned the game physical from that point on, and did a good job
disrupting the Cougars normally precise passing style with high pressure and
physical challenges for the remainder of the first half. Just before
halftime, an IWU forward broke through the SAU defense and as center defender
Diana Humphrey was attempting to work her off the ball, the referee whistled a
foul and awarded IWU a penalty kick, which they converted, knotting the score at
one a piece.
After some halftime adjustments, the Cougars came back out and turned the
pressure up on the Wildcats, forcing them back in to their own end and creating
several quality goal scoring opportunities. It was hustle rather than
finesse that got the Cougars the game winner however. Crissie Strohmaier
stripped an IWU defender of the ball and found herself with just the goalkeeper
between her and the net Strohmaier chipped the ball over the
goalkeeper successfully, only to see her shot crash off the crossbar.
Following her own shot, Strohmaier was there for the rebound, and tapped in the
game winner in the 60th minute of play.
Overall, the Cougars out shot the Wildcats by a count of 13-4 and held a 3-0
advantage in corners as well. In fact, the SAU defense was solid all
weekend long, and conceded only 13 total shots between the two opponents.
The NAIA #19 ranked Cougars will have to wait until Thursday when the
seeding for the 20 team (14 region champions and 6 at large bids) national championship
tournament is released. The championships are being hosted

Schoolcraft College 6 - Dakota County 1
Schoolcraft College women's soccer team is on the road again to Nationals.
On Saturday, Dakota County (MN), Region 13 champions, fell to SC by a 6-1 margin. The Ocelots roared to a 4-0 first half score. Nicole Saigh (Henry Ford II) put us on the board just 5 minutes into the game. Megan Romer (Canton) assisted and then 4 minutes later struck for one of her own. With 15 minutes to go, Nicole Saigh sent a ball across the front of the net that Lindsey Turkington (Sterling Heights Stevenson) put into the lower left corner. LeighAnne Myers (Brighton) closed out the first half with a goal of her own with an assist from a very busy Natalie Thomas (Salem).
Dakota did get on the board in the 2nd half. However, we continued to dominate the play. Nicole Saigh struck back with her 2nd goal of the game. Natalie Thomas capped the scoring at 6-1. Andrea Dunn (Garden City) started in goal and Meagan Farrell (Franklin) closed out the game.

Calvin 5 - Tri State 1
(By Abby Zylstra & Jeff Febus)
Calvin will get a chance to play for an outright MIAA title on Saturday
afternoon when the Knights host the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College at 2:00
p.m.
The two long-time rivals are now deadlocked for first place in the MIAA
standings after a 5-1 Calvin victory over Tri-State and a 1-0 Hope loss at
Kalamazoo Wednesday afternoon.
The MIAA title and an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament will be on the
line in Saturday's game. A victory will give either team the outright league
crown and the MIAA's NCAA III Tournament bid. A tie would create a
co-championship between the two schools for the second straight year but would
also give Hope (15-4-0 overall, 12-1-0 MIAA) the league's NCAA III Tournament
bid based on a head-to-head tie-breaker situation.
In the first meeting of the year between the two teams, Hope claimed a 1-0
victory in Holland on October 12.
Ranked eighth nationally and second in the latest set of NCAA III Great Lakes
Regional Rankings, Calvin (17-1-1 overall, 12-1-0 MIAA) led 4-0 at halftime in
its victory over Tri-State Wednesday and held control throughout the match.
"It was a good game for our team," said head coach Chris Hughes. "Our
guys came to play."
The first goal came at the 6:10 minute mark. Senior Joel Veldhouse
[Souix Falls, SD] kicked a corner kick to junior Matt Cosnek [Hopewell,
PA]. Cosnek headed the ball into the net.
At the 18:29 minute of play, Veldhouse received a breakaway pass from junior
Levi Kool [Holland] to score the second goal of the game and his team-leading
19th of the year.
Cosnek scored his second goal of the game and eighth of the year at the 19:34
minute mark with another header chipped from sophomore Nate Kooi [Lynden, WA}.
Sophomore Phil VanRees [Muskegon] scored his first goal of the season in the
43:37 minute of play with a shot in the box from freshman A.J.
Dufendach [Grand Rapids].
The only goal in the second half came from Kool at the 55:16 minute mark off a
pass from Cosnek.
All together the Knights took 25 shots. Tri-State's goalkeeper Adam
Franczak saved nine shots at goal and Calvin's freshman Dave Fortosis
saved one of the two Tri-State attempts at goal.
"We needed a good game before Saturday," said Hughes. "We're looking
forward to Saturday's game. It will be a great opportunity for both teams.
I'm sure it will be played at a high-intensity level."
With a goal and an assist Wednesday, Veldhouse boosted his MIAA point total to
40 points which ranks ninth on the MIAA's all-time single-season scoring
list.
Saturday's game between Calvin and Hope will mark the 76th meeting between
the two rivals in men's soccer. Calvin leads the all-time series 40-28-7 but
Hope has won seven of the last eight meetings.

Kyle LaPorte (Churchill) and Kara Jean (Dearborn) also scored to stake us to a 4-1 halftime lead.
The second half was more of the same with 4 different players finding the net. Casey Hoover (Walled Lake Western) literally opened the second half scoring. Calvin 3 - Adrian 0
With one game left in the regular season, Calvin is still alive in the MIAA title chase but will need help to win the crown.
The Knights remain a point behind league-leading Hope after a 3-0 victory over Adrian Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field but Hope also kept up the pace with a 6-1 triumph over Kalamazoo Tuesday.
Calvin will travel to Kalamazoo on Saturday while Hope will journey to Alma with both games slated to start at noon. Hope can capture its second straight league title with a win at Alma while Calvin must defeat Kalamazoo and hope for a Hope loss or tie against Alma.
A year ago, Calvin finished second behind Hope ironically by just one point.
In its win over Adrian Tuesday afternoon on a dark and gloomy day at Calvin Field, the Knights did all of their scoring in a span of six minutes midway through the first half.
Junior Kara Zuidema (Escondido, CA) put the Knights on the board with a goal in the 25th minute with sophomore Leah Scholten (Unity Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play with a back pass. The goal was the ninth of the year for Zuidema * marking a single-season high for the Southern California native.
Calvin struck for its second goal two minutes later with sophomore Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) blasting a shot into the top shelf of the Adrian goal for her team-leading 21st goal of the year. Sophomore Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) picked up an assist on the play as she beat two defenders up the right wing and delivered pass with pace through the goalmouth that Capel was able to one-time.
Weesies then chalked up her 16th goal of the year four minutes later on a blast in the box with Scholten picking up her second assist of the game on the play.
Scholten currently has nine assists on the year * also a new single-season high for the Hudsonville native.
With her goal Tuesday afternoon, Capel brought her league scoring total to 51 points, matching the fifth-best single-season scoring total in MIAA women's soccer history. Capel also has 19 goals in league play which matches the sixth-best single-season total in MIAA women's soccer history.
Calvin finished with a 33-5 shots at goal advantage and could have won by a wider margin if not for the strong play of Adrian goalkeeper Reshia Jamieon who collected 11 saves, several of which were in one-on-one confrontations with Calvin attackers.
Calvin junior goalkeeper Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) was also strong for the Knights, recording three saves in picking up her sixth shutout victory of the season.

Fast Start Puts Dutch Win Away from Championship
The final regular season home game for seniors Dawn Gillam and Catie
Neidlinger was a cause for celebration Tuesday as the Flying Dutch moved
within a victory of repeating as MIAA champions by routing visiting Kalamazoo
6-1.
Gillam scored three goals while Neidlinger scored one and was credited with
three assists as the Flying Dutch moved to 12-1-2 in the MIAA with one game
remaining. That game will come Saturday at Alma.
The Flying Dutch are one point ahead of Calvin in the MIAA standings.
Under a scoring system that gives three points for a win and one for a tie,
the Flying Dutch have 38 points (12-1-2) while Calvin has 37 points
(12-2-1).
This was game was quite a contrast from the first meeting of the teams when
Hope eeked out a 1-0 victory at Kalamazoo.
The Flying Dutch scored four first half goals and ended the game with a
15-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Gillam set the tempo scoring her 39th career goal off an assist from
Neidlinger in the 13th minute of the game. Neidlinger followed seven minutes
later and then assisted on Gillam's second in just the 27th minute. Freshman
Ellie Tresslar scored unassisted with seven minutes left in the half to give
Hope the four-goal lead.
Kalamazoo had new life to start the second half as Elizabeth Hauslein scored
five minutes into it. The Dutch weren't about to let the Hornets back into the
game as freshman Sarah Cochrane, off yet another Neidlinger assist, scored in
the 60th minute and then Gillam closed it out unassisted in the 75th.
Sophomore goalkeeper Holly Nestle was credited with four saves.

Weesies's second goal came at the 50:53 minute mark in the second half,
assisted by Evans. Weesies captialized on the opportunity after the goalie
left her box.
At the 57:36 minute mark, Weesies scored her third goal of the game, a
direct shot into the box. She was assisted by Hutchinson.
Capel scored the fourth goal of the game off of Otten with 15:59 left in
the game with another shot into the box.
"I don't think we were sharp in the first half. We didn't come with
the
level of intensity I expected," said head coach Mark Recker. "It was a
two-half game. The first half was nonchalant, methodical. The second
half was focused, effective, and purposeful."
Tri-State falls to 0-13-1 in the MIAA and 2-11-1 overall. The Knights

Calvin 1 - Kalamazoo 0 (2OT)
by Abby Zylstra '08
A dramatic sudden-death overtime goal allowed Calvin to record a thrilling 1-0 in double overtime victory over visiting Kalamazoo College Tuesday afternoon at the
Calvin Field. The victory allowed Calvin (15-1-1 overall, 10-1-0 MIAA) to remain three points behind league-leading Hope (11-0-0 MIAA) which also needed overtime on Tuesday to beat Albion 3-2.
Calvin defeated Kalamazoo 1-0 earlier this season at Kalamazoo, giving the Knights their first season sweep of the Hornets since 1999.
A furious Kalamazoo effort nearly kept the Knights from achieving that accomplishment however until Calvin sophomore David Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was able to deliver the game-winning goal, his third of the year. Holwerda's "golden goal" came with just 3:57 left in the second overtime as he slid a low shot past a charging Kalamazoo goalkeeper with senior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) setting up the play with an assist.
"I was ready for it," said Holwerda who has scored all eight of his goals this fall of the bench. "I was going to make sure I cleaned it up."
Holwerda's goal marked the only shot for either team in the second and final overtime.
The play was set up by a crossing pass by Veldhouse which originally was intended to be a shot on goal.
"I was thinking I was going to be the one to score," said Veldhouse with a grin.
"My pass was actually a lucky bad shot that went right to David."
Both teams finished with 11 shots at goal but eight of Kalamazoo's shots were on goal, forcing Calvin goalkeeper Joe Westra [Grand Rapids] to make eight saves including a pair of key stops in the final minute of the first overtime when the Hornets had back-to-back breakaways on goal. Kalamazoo goalkeeper David Antzcak had three saves for Kalamazoo (7-8-0 overall, 5-5-0 MIAA) in goal.
"It was a good game - a hard fought battle," said head coach Chris
Hughes. "If you hope to contend for a championship, you have to find a way to win games like this."
Hughes also gave credit to the Hornets. "They pushed us to the limit and I tip my hat to them," said Hughes. "They made us dig down deep in order to beat them. Their effort was outstanding."
Calvin is currently 17th in the latest Division III National Poll and has now recorded 13 shutout victories * a new Calvin single-season record.
Westra has been a part of all 13 Calvin shutouts and now has a goals-against-average of 0.39 which ranks among the top 10
net minders in NCAA III men's soccer.
"The boys are getting smarter - they're finding options," said Hughes.
"I think a lot of it comes with the maturity of the players and the
game."

Flying Dutchmen Avoid Upset; Edge Albion in Overtime
The Flying Dutchmen received a big scare in their march toward an MIAA
championship on Tuesday edging Albion 3-2 in overtime.
Hope was nursing a 2-0 lead late in the second half when the visiting
Britons scored twice to force the overtime. Karter Klingenberg's goal with
just 38 seconds remaining in the first overtime period preserved Hope's
perfect MIAA record and extended the team's winning streak to 11 in-a-row.
Hope maintains its grasp on first place in the MIAA race. Rival Calvin
stayed right on Hope's heels gaining a 1-0 overtime victory over Kalamazoo.
With three games remaining, Hope is 11-0 for 33 points while Calvin behind
a 10-1 mark has 30 points.
The Flying Dutchmen appeared to be easily on their way to victory behind a
first half goal from Devin McNeil and a second by Geoff Meyer off a McNeil
assist.
The momentum took a rapid swith when Albion's Jonathon Smith scored in
the 76th minute and then Jonathon Clark put one in the goal from the top
of the box with 1:23 remaining in regulation.
Hope was not about to let this important game escape them. Klingenberg took
a cross from Baine Rumohr and buried the ball with a shot from the
middle of the box.
Hope ended with a 16-6 advantage in shots on goal. Hope goalkeeper Kevin
Butterfield was credited with two saves.

Less than two minutes later, junior Kara Zuidema (Escondido Calvin Christian) scored her seventh goal of the season with the assist going to Capel. In the 39th minute of the first half, Capel scored her second unassisted goal of the afternoon on a rebound off the goalkeeper.

ALBION - Calvin extended its unbeaten streak to eight games and remained on
top of the MIAA women's soccer standings with a 4-2 victory at Albion College
Wednesday afternoon.
Calvin (9-4-1 overall) has now won six straight games and remains two points
ahead of Hope (7-1-2 MIAA) in the league standings as the Knights are currently
8-1-1 in conference play.
In Wednesday's game against the host Britons, Calvin once again rode the
dynamic scoring duo of sophomores Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) and Sarah
Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) to victory. Capel picked up her team-leading
15th goal of the year in the win while also notching a pair of assists to bring
her team-leading total to 11. Weesies scored two goals and gained an assist to
bring her season totals to 11 goals and seven assists.
Junior Kara Zuidema (Escondido, CA) also got into the scoring act with her
sixth goal of the season. Zuidema's tally gave Calvin a 1-0 lead 11 minutes
into the match but Albion (5-7-2 overall, 5-3-2 MIAA) came back to tie the
score on an unassisted goal by Karen LaFlair 10 minutes later
The Knights then struck for two goals inside the final 15 minutes of the first
half with Capel heading in a shot off a feed from Weesies in the 35th minute
and Weesies scoring shortly after. The unassisted goal by Weesies came with
just 4:23 left in the half and allowed Calvin to take a 3-1 halftime lead.
Albion crept to within one on a goal by Ashley Rosaen with 25 minutes left in
regulation but Weesies followed with her second goal of the game, converting a
feed from Capel with 14:49 left on the clock. The goal by Weesies would prove
to be the clincher as the Knights held on for the two-goal win.
Calvin finished the match with a 20-7 shots at goal advantage. Junior
goaltender Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) had three saves in goal for the
Knights while Deanna DeRoo had 10 saves for the Britons.
The final outcome was a reversal of the first meeting of the year between the
two teams as Albion had recorded a 5-3 victory over Calvin back on September
15. Since that defeat, Calvin has ripped off its current eight-game unbeaten
streak.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it plays host to Olivet at noon at

Hope 1 - Calvin 0
HOLLAND * At the midway point of the MIAA men's soccer campaign, Hope College is in control of first place in the conference standings.
The Flying Dutchmen (10-3-0 overall, 7-0-0 MIAA) seized control of the top spot with a 1-0 victory over nationally-ranked Calvin Tuesday afternoon at the Buys Athletic Complex. The defeat was the first of the year for Calvin (11-1-0 overall, 6-1-0 MIAA) which saw its 13-game unbeaten streak snapped.
Meanwhile, Hope extended its win streak over Calvin at the Buys Athletic Complex to five games as the Knights have not won in Holland since 1999. Hope has now won six of the last seven meetings against Calvin.
Over the last 20 years, the two rivals are now deadlocked in head-to-head competition with the series standing 19-19-3 during that span.
Heading into Tuesday's game at Hope, Calvin had produced six consecutive shutout victories and held opponents scoreless for over 620 minutes. Hope would break that streak however with a goal by junior Geoff Meyer with just 3:02 left in the first half, ending Calvin's scoreless streak at 665 minutes.
Meyer nearly scored on a header in the game's opening five minutes but sent his shot high over the crossbar. Meyer would not make the mistake with time ticking down in the first half though as he redirected a serve from senior Todd Chappa off a free kick from the 25-yard line that snuck just inside the near post and past Calvin junior goaltender Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Calvin never seriously threatened in the first half but nearly scored in the opening five minutes of the second half of a corner kick deflection from sophomore Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS). Hope junior goalkeeper Kevin Butterfield was able to make deflect the shot wide of the goal with a fingertip save.
Both teams were credited with 15 shots at goal but Hope clearly had the higher quality scoring opportunities. Hope nearly took a 2-0 lead midway through the first half as junior forward Karter Klingenberg broke free in the Calvin box off a well-placed chip by Hope's Devin McNeil. Klingenberg was able to get behind Westra but his shot at a wide-open goal hit the near post. Klingenberg then got a second whack on a rebound shot but Westra was able to slide in front to make the save.
Minutes later, Hope sent another shot that got behind Westra but Calvin defender John VanWylen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was able to clear the ball just in front of the goal-line.
Calvin would up the pressure in the final 15 minutes with junior Levi Kool (Holland Christian HS) and sophomore Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa, WI) just missing upper corners with big rips from the 25 yard line. Capisciolto also came close on a chip shot inside the closing 10 minutes but was just wide.
Westra was credited with seven saves in defeat while Butterfield had nine saves for Hope.
Ranked fourth in today's NSCAA Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin now sits in second place, three points behind Hope and just three points ahead of hard-charging Alma which moved to 5-2 in the conference with a 2-1 victory over Albion Wednesday afternoon.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts the Bulldogs of Adrian with a RealAudio broadcast (www.Calvin.edu/sports) set for 2:00 p.m.

Schoolcraft College 2 - Cincinnati State 1 (OT)
SC Women Earned Region XII Title
Schoolcraft College women's soccer team gave every thing they had to retain our hold on the Region XII title. SC needed overtime to finally put away a very determined and aggressive Cincinnati State (OH) team. Because we had beaten Cinci earlier in the season to give us the advantage in the Region XII championship race, Cinci had to beat us to force a playoff for the title. As if they did not need more incentive, we came in as the #1 ranked team in the NSCAA national poll. State outplayed us in the first half and took 1-0 lead on a free kick. While shots on net were slightly in our favor, Cinci really controlled the pace of the first half. We could easily have been down by more at the half except for our equally determined defense lead by Arielle Bryant (Canton) and Meagan Farrell (Franklin). .
SC adjusted at the half and came out ready to win in the second half. began to take control;. Our conditioning as it has all year helped us to finally took its toll on State. We began to take control. Nicole Saigh (Henry Ford II) put a shot into the lower left corner of the net at the 21 minute mark. LeighAnne Myers (Brighton) provided the support. We missed on several other very good opportunities, but our confidence continued to grow. The game ended deadlocked at 1-1.
It took just over a minute into the overtime before Megan Romer (Canton) pushed a crossed ball from
Leigh Anne Myers into the far side of the goal for the game winner and Regional championship. Andrea Dunn (Garden City) anchored the net for us the 2nd half and OT.
Our record improves to 14-0-0 on the season. SC is ranked #1 in the NSCAA poll and #3 in the NJCAA poll. Our next game is Thursday at Albion at 2:00 PM.

loose ball just past midfield, took a dribble and then cracked a 45-yard blast
that knuckled just underneath the crossbar for his second goal of the year.
Senior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) picked up his team-leading 12th goal
of the year with just under 10 minutes remaining as he curled in a free kick
from the 25 yard line around a wall of defenders and into the right hand side

Just over 10 minutes later, Weesies provided the clinching goal as she took a pass from Scholten and ripped a shot over the head of Heline to give the Knights a two-goal lead they would not relinquish.

Calvin won the shooting battle 17-8, but junior Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian) turned away a couple of strong opportunities from the Hornets in the second half, having to make two great saves to achieve his eighth shutout of the season and 19th of his collegiate career. Westra's first big save came in the 54th minute of the match as he recovered to make a spectacular kick-save on a rebound shot by Kalamazoo's Evan Wright. In the afternoon game, Cincinnati State (OH) tied the MSU club team on a goal with 22 seconds left in the game.

SC prevailed with a 1-0 victory on Sunday to clinch our Invitational for the 6th consecutive time. The game was deadlocked 0-0 through the first half. The game continued back and forth until Tiffani Tuzzolino (Sterling Heights Stevenson) nailed the game winner at the 26 minute mark. She was assisted by Kara Jean (Dearborn) and Natalie Thomas (Salem) who leads our team with 8 assists. Megan Farrell went the distance in net and SC recorded our 9th shutout of the season.

SC Gains Edge with Win Over Cinci State
Schoolcraft women's soccer team gained the upper hand in the hunt for a Region XII championship on Saturday with a big win over
(OH). Cinci State came into the game ranked 11th in the NJCAA national poll. They played with intensity and skill but were unable to crack our stingy defense while we were able to find the net 3 times. Our 3-0 win was lead by Natalie Thomas (Salem) who struck for the only goal of the first half. She was assisted by Megan Romer (Canton).
Halfway into the second half, Nicole Saigh (Henry Ford II) with help from a friend, Cortney Brady (Algonac), hit for our second goal to give us some breathing room. She had a very determined effort on the day. Megan Romer took away any hope with our 3rd goal. She picked up her own rebound and finished the scoring. Meagan Farrell went the distance in goal while we recorded our 7th shutout of the season.
This ups our record to 11-0-0 on the season. Schoolcraft hosts our own Ocelot Invitational Tournament next weekend (October 2 & 3). We open against Loyola - Chicago on Saturday morning at 11:00 AM. Cinci State makes a return visit to SC and plays MSU at 1:30 PM. On Sunday morning, SC takes on MSU at 11:00 AM and with Cinci completing play at 1:30 PM against Loyola.

Calvin 2 - Ferris State University 0
Coming off of a hard-fought 2-2 double-overtime tie with rival Hope Tuesday
afternoon, the question for the Calvin women's soccer team heading into a
Thursday match up with non-conference rival Ferris State University was whether
the Knights had any gas left in the tank.
The answer was a resounding "yes" as Calvin responded with a spirited 2-0
shutout victory over the NCAA Division II Bulldogs, allowing the Knights to
reach the .500 mark overall for the first time in the 2004 season.
The victory also made amends for a 3-1 defeat at Ferris State a year ago while
allowing the Knights to improve to 4-4-1 overall.
A pair of first-year players came up with their first collegiate goals in
Thursday's win as freshman Lindsay Hutchison (Arlington Hts, IL) scored in
the first half with freshman Lynn Marsh (North Vernon, VA) scoring the clincher
in the second half.
Calvin dominated the opening 45 minutes but was unable to score until the 34th
minute on a corner kick play. Sophomore Leah Scholten (Unity Christian HS)
sent the corner into the heart of the penalty box, allowing sophomore Jill
Capel (Unity Christian HS) to get a foot on the cross. Capel's touch sent
the ball right to the feet of Hutchison who made no mistake in depositing a low
hard shot into the left hand corner of the Ferris State goal.
In the 57th minute, Calvin took advantage of another corner kick opportunity
as Scholten sent another high-winding serve into the box. Scholten's ball
was punched out for Ferris State goalkeeper Carla Gilbertson but Marsh stepped
in front of the punch-out, collected the ball and rifled a shot into the right
hand corner of the net.
Ferris State (3-4-1 overall) would threatened in the final 15 minutes of play
but Calvin's backline spearheaded by sophomore sweeper back Tricia DeVries
(Grand Rapids Christian HS) kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.
Calvin finished the match with a 17-9 shots at goal advantage including an
11-3 advantage in the first half. Junior Linda Heilman (South Christian HS)
picked up three saves for the Knights in posting her first collegiate shutout
victory. Gilbertson had four saves in defeat for Ferris State.
Calvin will now break until September 29 when it journeys to Tri-State
University for a conference match.

Dutch & Knights Battle to 2-2 MIAA Draw
In a showdown of MIAA frontrunners, the Flying Dutch gained a dramatic2-2 draw
with rival Calvin on Tuesday. The tie, combined with a 2-0 Saint
Mary's victory over Albion, creates a three-way tie for first place in the
MIAA standings. Hope, Calvin and Saint Mary's each have 10 points. Hope and
Saint Mary's are 3-0-1 while Calvin is 3-1-1. A win is good for three points
in the standings while a tie gets a team one point.
A dramatic Hope goal with only 23 seconds remaining in regulation forced
overtime during which neither team could score. Senior Dawn Gillam headed her
34th career goal off a corner kick from freshman Elisa Tresslar at 89:37 of
the 90-minute game.
Calvin led 2-1 at intermission on goals by Jill Capel and Sarah Weesies. The
Flying Dutch got on the board in the 36th minute on a header by Linnae

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Hope 2 - Calvin 2
An early-season showdown for first place in the MIAA standings produced a
memorable contest Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field as Calvin and Hope battled
to a dramatic 2-2 double-overtime tie.
Tuesday's draw between the two long-time rivals creates a three-way tie for
first place in the MIAA standings between Calvin, Hope and St. Mary's. With a
victory now worth three points and a tie worth one point in the league
standings, all three teams now have 10 points in conference play although
Calvin (3-1-1 MIAA) has played one more conference game than Hope (3-0-1 MIAA)
and St. Mary's (3-0-1 MIAA).
Although sluggish in some of its earlier games, the Knights showed that they
came to play in the opening minutes on Tuesday. Sophomore Leah Scholten (Unity
Christian HS) helped set the tone by ringing a left-footed blast off the
cross-bar just 1:47 into the match. Scholten's blast came straight down on the
goal-line but was cleared away moments before Calvin (3-4-0 overall) could
stick in the rebound.
The Knights then lit the scoreboard first as sophomore Jill Capel (Unity
Christian HS) was held from behind in the penalty box and was awarded a penalty
kick just 9:59 into the match. Capel made no mistake on the PK, ripping a shot
into the left-hand corner that left Hope goalkeeper Holly Nestle flat-footed.
Hope (3-2-1 overall) would come back to tie the score on a goal by Linnae
Klompmaker with 9:33 left in the half. Senior Dawn Gillam was the catalyst in
the Hope scoring connection as she beat a pair of defenders up the right wing
and launched a perfect cross to the far post that Klompmaker was able to head
into a wide-open net.
Calvin answered right back however on a breakaway goal by sophomore Sarah
Weesies less than two minutes later. Scholten ignited the play with a perfect
lead pass that sent Weesies free up the left wing. With Nestle charging out of
the box, Weesies slid a perfectly placed shot on the ground that clanged just
inside the far crossbar and into the net.
Calvin would hold its 2-1 lead for much of the second half and had several
chances to widen the gap but Nestle was up to the challenge with several superb
saves for the Flying Dutch.
Hope began to press the attack inside the final 10 minutes of regulation and
nearly struck paydirt on back-to-back corner kick plays with under five minutes
left to play. Hope then received its third corner kick inside the final five
minutes with under a minute left on the block and the Flying Dutch made the
most of the opportunity as Elisa Tresslar sent a curling drive into the box and
Gillam followed with a leaping header that snuck into the top shelf. The
game-tying goal came with just 24 seconds left on the clock, forcing overtime.
In the pair of extra 10-minute sessions, both teams threatened. Weesies had a
near breakaway stopped with a leaping save by Nestle two minutes into the first
overtime. Hope then followed with three straight shots with sophomore
goaltender Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) coming up with a big save with
4:30 left in overtime number-one.
In overtime number-two, Hope would outshoot Calvin 5-1 but three of Hope's
shots were wide while Heilman was able to make a pair of clutch saves to
preserve the draw.
Calvin finished with a 22-21 shots at goal advantage but Hope held a 10-4
advantage into the two overtime sessions. Nestle had 10 saves for Hope while
Heilman had seven saves for the Knights.
The goal by Capel was her team-leading eighth of the year. In conference play,
she currently leads the MIAA in goals (6) and points (14) while Weesies leads
the league in assists (5) and is second in points (11).
Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Ferris State in a
non-conference game at Calvin Field. The game will be broadcast via RealAudio
through the Calvin web site at: www.Calvin.edu/sports
