U.S. MNT World Cup Update
June 13, 2010
Rustenburg , South Africa
THE HAPPY RECAP: Clint Dempsey joined Brian McBride as the only U.S.
player to score in two FIFA World Cups as the U.S. Men’s National Team
came from behind to tie England . The U.S. fell behind in the fourth
minute when Steven Gerrard slipped in behind the U.S. defense and
slotted a goal past Tim Howard, marking the third-straight World Cup
that the USA’s opening game featured a goal in the first five minutes.
The U.S. held a regeneration session for the starters on Sunday, while
the reserves hit the field for a full workout.

TIM HOWARD INJURY UPDATE: The U.S. MNT training staff is closely
monitoring Tim Howard’s progress as he receives treatment for the
bruised ribs he suffered against England on a challenge from Emile
Heskey. Howard will be evaluated once again in the morning to determine
if any tests will be required.
SLOVENIA TAKES CHARGE OF GROUP C WITH WIN AGAINST ALGERIA: Former West
Brom midfielder and Slovenia captain Robert Koren scored a 79th-minute
goal against a 10-man Algeria side to take first place in Group C after
the first round of matches. Algeria’s Abdelkader Ghezzal received his
second yellow card just 15 minutes after coming into the game in the
58th minute, and six minutes later Algeria’s Faouzi Chaouchi misjudged
the bouncing shot from Koren that made Slovenia the first team to reach
three points after a game that featured just six shots on goal, the same
number of shots on goal Tim Howard saved against England. Bob Bradley
said, “ Slovenia played a tactical game. They are well organized and
solid defensively. They got a good goal from Robert Koren, who has been
an important player for Slovenia throughout qualifying.”

U.S. MNT Head Coach BOB BRADLEY
On turning preparations toward Slovenia in just five days:
“In reality, we had five weeks to prepare for the World Cup, and the
players will tell you that it was only in the last four or five days
that we really turned the focus on England. As a coaching staff, we had
done our homework along the way, but we’ve done that with Slovenia and
Algeria as well. When you’ve played a match, the day after is
regeneration and, for the players who didn’t play, training. As a
coaching staff, we’ve gone through the tape and we’ll start to look for
some things with the team and getting some things established with
Slovenia . The time frame for us is actually the same.”
U.S. Defender STEVE CHERUNDOLO
On the team’s mentality after last night:
“Right now it’s all about recovery but last night guys were excited just
to get the World Cup up and running, and getting that game behind us. I
think the most important thing people tend to oversee is the importance
of a point in your first game. It doesn’t matter who it’s against, a
loss in your first game is devastating. So really the most important
thing is that point. Guys are really excited now about our chances at
making the next round, but more focused on recovery and happy to have
this huge game with a very large media presence behind us with a
positive result for us.”
